Hello all. noob here.

I'm sorry if an idea or "wish list" similar to this hs been previously posted, but i did have a bit of a look around.

Ok my 'idea' goes like this; how about making the player feel like they're acually playing in a futuristic tournament, instead of just playing a video game?
To clarify this; In Deus Ex (while UT will never have the same style of gameplay) I feel like i'm JCDenton, uncovering conspiracies and whatnot.
In UT2004, i feel like im playing a videogame.

The obvious rebuttle to this is; UT is'nt MEANT to have a great storyline, plot twists, ETC. But, it's not the big things that need to change, it's the little things. Like when a game ends, you're confronted with a big box that says "YOU WON!!" or lost or whatever. how about this, you're still in the map, a buzzer goes off, and all of your weapons are locked. You and your team will make their way back to a section of the map which becomes available (such as a previously closed door, or in larger maps, a vehicle rolls in such as a big truck or manta- type thing) and the match results will be diplayed on an in-game screen. And, thanks to the new super chatty A.I, they will either cheer if they win, or moan and bitch if they lose, throw things at the screen (gorge?). When you're walking back to you're 'base', members of the opposite team would bump into you if they got close enough, or yell stuff at you like "I'll get you next time, you arse!". This feature would obviously aimed at single-play (offline where Epic is suposedly focusing more on then previous UT titles), but could be also incorperated into online play.

A few little features such as this could really help with the immersion in the game. I'd like to hear anymore ideas regarding this.

Cheers!

Actually, When i play football I don t care if my football game is not a part of a story line, I just play it for what it is.
for the same reason, I don t mind if UT does not have any story line... that s not what I am looking for when I wanna frag... but I can understand that some people wish to get more depth concerning the story, but is UT the right game for that? ...

bugs are features too ...

I says : Why not ?
In on-line games people often shout stuff like 'gg', 'U h4xx0rr3d' and 'we pWn3d U',etc. at the end of a match/round.

It would be nice if UT2k7 could built on that kind of stuff in the singleplayer-section as well.

Interesting point. Single player, maybe... ok, yes nice, but...

I prefer the video game nature of Unreal and play to relax and escape from the real world, having fun. :)

Aren't there plenty of real life simulation games already? I've no idea, as I've only played UTx and Total War for the last 12mths or so.

Isn't the over-the-top and unreal aspect of Unreal a major characteristic and differentiator? I think it is.

EDIT: Where are my manners?! Welcome to BuF Daedalus0055. :wavey:

Thats an interesting point, el bouriko. I guess it comes down to what you want out of it, a sport or a fantasy. UT seems to very much be marketed as a sport nowadays anyway. I hope that the new features Epic are proposing will make up for the lack of immersion in '04 and especially '03.
I've been playing Unreal scince '98 and for me it's kinda lost the atmosphere it once had. To clear things up, i dont care if 07 has a storyline or not, i was more after an atmosphere. When you're playing football, you've got people watching you, everyone's trying really fckin hard to score a goal, it gets your adrenilin pumping.... you get the jist of it.

Now that the devs have all the tools they need to make the enviroments almost completley convicing, how about adding a little more human element into the game? i.e. advanced sound (using EAX - a feature which was 'tacked on' to '04, but not supported in one single map), such as Reverbs and echos appropriate to their spaces. UT 99 had pretty decent sound in this respect. Also some better music...

it would be cool in single player but the rest of the implementation must work with this. I dont see 2k4 single player with this feature. Good idea tho

DM-Morpheus had the scoreboard in-map and it was pretty cool. I'm not sure I'd want it in all the maps though because, for me, that would kind of ruin the immersion. I'm trying to imagine an atmospheric map like DM-Peak with some kind of plasma TV stuck to the wall. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to sit there while everyone hoofs it back to the locker room either.

how bout a city map with a giant display screen on top of a building showing the game in progress from different angles, with two commentators on the case,
bringing in the whole concept that this is a game with a worldwide audience.....................

I would be pleased to have these kind of features since we are supposed to play for an audience as the intro of UT2k4 suggests it.
And for sure the crowd shouting on each multi kills or announcements of Rampage, Dominating, Unstoppable and so on on speakers could be some kind of cool even if I am not sure that the commentators would be able to say properly those names with supposed to be fancy but weird characters... (As a designer, I never could understand that people find it nice (or original ??? lots of people do it!!!) with these special letters, but well I am an human and my judgement may be wrong too).

Daedalus0055, you are a frickin mind reader. I posted a message almost identical to yours on some other ut2007 board somewhere. What I suggested was like your idea where the weapons just lock up and then into the locker rooms, and from there I went on to suggest using UE3's seamless capabilities to take you (possibly via a truck or limo or somthing) to your "training facility" where you and your team could practice inside your gym, schedule matches with other teams, or just plain chill and chat with each other.

Here's a few related ideas that I just thought up:

EXPLAIN RESPAWNING!!!
I always hate it when you play a match, get blown to little giblets that fly all over the map, and then finish the match and it says "your teammate was injured". No s***, I was kicking his bloody head around like a soccer ball! This goes along with the storyline stuff like "Lauren died during a match." I would like it much more if it was like "Due to a suspicious malfunction of the respawning modules, Lauren did not respawn when killed during a match." and put a corperate consparicy behind it.

Sponsoring!
As a bit of a single player minigame, you could sign and manage contracts with sponsor companies. The more matches you win, the more popular you get, and the more companies want to advertise with you. You could, of course, demand more pay, threaten to switch to their competitors, etc. You could use the extra money to influence what maps you play on, what color team you get, etc., or to improve your training facility.

Picking out your team in person
Don't just look at the numbers and a portrait, actually play with your possible teammates, get to know them, etc. I think it would be a nice dose of realism to not let someone on your team cause they're whiney or cause they have no respect for authority and disobey your commands. That would kick a** to hate someone and then later find out they're the leader of their own team, and kinda develop a team rivalry with them.

only one problem about chillin off while map loads. Map loads too fast. And will still laod too fast to have time to chill out or do some cool thing(im talking about Multiplayer here)

YES YES YES EXPLAIN RESPAWNING!! Otherwise it doesnt make sense to get injured!!

YES!!! because that will ACTUALLY make it FEEL like an "Unreal Tournament"......

Ya that would cool too because it would also go along with when they said they're bringing more personality into the bots.

Wow, i didn't think take it that far..... would it be possible? It would probally mean that UT would need a conversational system, something i just can't see happening. either that or the bots only talk to you like in HL2.

+edit : spelling mistake

Well, it sounds like thats what epic is adding. they're gonna be using it for voice commands, but the two really aren't that far off.

Said ther should be training map tutorial on this thread:
http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?t=159701

My point was there should be a tutorial unlike any done before.
Other tutorials make you go trough a bunch of stupid basics that you may not need to know, but you have to complete it otherwise.

I reackons, the tutorial should have no end to it, its completly open, and works on a need to know basis.

It would be one map that teaches you the basics of all gamplay and vehicles, aswell as complex moves and trick jumps, it works offline and online,

think the training module in The Matrix that Neo goes trough and you will understand what i mean, it could even have an intsructor programme that you can ask questions, and can demonstrate all the games nuances aswell as train against.

The idea is that this would make the game immersive at the same time as having an intelligent tutorial system that allows you progressivly learn at your own will, but you dont have to complete it, you actually cant completely

Imagine how cool it would be if the instuctor shouts at you in 'c'mon stop trying to hit me, and hit me!' during a training duel
