Dual monitors not cutting it need a third
Ok browsing 4 different forums at once using Fire Fox along with several sites, chatting with NoFate, editing some MP3 tags, working on a database, cropping some images, testing a weapon for INF, and doing some HTML and watching a 3Dbuzz VTM all on an 19" & 17" monitors using an 5900 graphic card.
Any suggestions in adding a third monitor? |

Couldn't you use one of those multiple desktop interfaces?

You shouldn't be doing so many things at once. A man died once because he was watching TV, looking something up on the computer, and reading a book all at once. It was like a brain overload or something.

Actually I do have one of those devices. I can hook up 4 computers to 1 monitor, keyboard and mouse. My second monitor is setup to switch to my other desktop machine and my laptop. And yes they are usually busy with something.

I don't see why you would be doing all those at the same time. Do you suffer from ADD? You would probably be more efficient if you focused on one item, working on another if you run into an intensive task that keeps the PC busy. Unless of course, you're the type that can't stand to work on something for longer than 5 mins and need to skip to something else.
I would recommend you activate Multiple desktops like Yurch suggested. Also, unless you're running a Parhelia, how are you going to attach threee monitors? Good luck Ben!

Actually I don't have ADD, I just can manage a lot of work at once and from 8pm to 12am is when I usually get the most work done. Weekends during the summer are far to busy to get anything done.
Also I miss read yurch's post and now I get it. Will look into it. Actually I think my video card may come with that function. Thanks for reminding me. Last edited by (SDS)benmcl; 16th Aug 2004 at 08:53 PM. |

Jesus fucking christ dude.
Break your tasks into chunks or something, like work on chunk one for a while, then chunk two and so on.

Well, it's not always a matter of working on so many things at once, but setting them up.
For instance, when I'm coding something inftacular or for school, there's often a good 31 files or so open in textpad for work/reference, and possibly a few browser windows open with assignment info, SSH terminal, ect. That's a full desktop there - throw in IRC, and any messanger programs you have, these forums, and possibly OTHER assignments, you can cover two desktops fairly easy. Sure, you could close each one of them when you are done, but it's a pain in the ass to hunt down 31 classfiles, for instance, once you want to start up again.

yurch, that's why I used to have a folder on my desktop with alphabetized shortcuts to each class file I needed. No need to worry about closing something and not finding it again.
I guess if you wanted, you could further organize it with a few more folders, but meh.

I went with the buy more laptops route. They can be pretty crappy ones if you have a linux server running multiple Xvnc sessions. Plus you get that cool Matrix operator terminal look.

Yeah, get fifteen or sixteen LCD screens of varying sizes, take off the casings, pour a mould about them, cast steel casings, maybe shoot steel casings several times (for that cool "shot up screen" effect
), put casings onto screens, hang screens off roof using some chains.![]() Sweeeeeet

They are just multiple monitors stuck together, and if you look at the PC's they sell to run them they use a VidCard per screen in the system!
t'would be cheaper to just buy a PCI vidcard if all you want is desktop space

I like my dual setup. I considered going to three, but at that point it became more of a novelty thing. Two is good, though. On the downside, whenever I use a single-monitor system, I feel claustrophobic.
