The best part about that is, it's in frozen form!

Wait til they find out that Fanta has a secret underground factory there (you'd have to be martian to come up with all the new flavours they have ).

I think what Ferd really meant to say is that these are the first actual photographs of water on Mars.

The area is 100 km across, with a resolution of 12 m per pixel, and shows a channel (Reull Vallis) once formed by flowing water.
Once formed or formed [and currently filled with ice]?

I guess so. Once formed by flowing water, now filled with frozen water.

That's pretty exciting then. If that's true it probably is one of the most important discoveries of this decade, maybe even century.

Could be century. Can't think of too many discoveries over the last four years...

Um, I can't think of any either, but I think there must have been some that were more important than 'if we manage to figure out how to get astronauts to make a six-month journey in a cramped spaceship without going insane, then get them to land on a planet with no oxygen and very little heat, they will at least be able to get some fresh water if they can land on the South Pole and bring along a flamethrower to melt it'.

It's obviously a very exciting discovery if you're involved in space, but what good does it do us? It doesn't mean there's life, and if there is any life I still don't see what use it is.

Radiation is the major obstacle to a manned mars mission I think. Also, it is hot on mars, during the "day" anyway. And Isnt there oxygen in water? I read somewhere about cool stuff they could do with a water source on the planet surface. Ill try to dig up a link. Its a huge part of the requirements for an eventual settlement.

Of course theres Oxygen in water H2O... an oxygen molecule for every 2 hydrogens. I think they can split up water molecules to make O2 (oxygen gas) and use the extra hydrogens for other stuff, like making marshmallow cream pies and ****. Then they can terraform the planet into a habitable one over hundreds/thousands of years of stuff after the introduction of anaerobic bacteria and then cyanobacteria and other prokaryotes that contribute to the formation of an atmosphere that sustains life Amazing stuff
