I know that I asked if anyone was running a UT server on RoadRunner. I should have been more specific.

Is anyone running a DEDICATED server on Road Runner and having problems with RoadRunner moaning about it? Is anyone running Linux and leaving their system on 24/7 w/ Road Runner?

Here's the reason I'm asking this again. I've only got 128k upstream w/ my DSL. I really wanna run a server with more than 4 players on it. Therefore, I'm thinking about going cable. I really don't want to pay an additional $140/month to upgrade my upstream to ONLY 384k....

Thanks for the assistance!

They have no right to complain as far as I know. You're given 24/7 access to your internet connection. I could see if you were hosting your own domain or web site (which some cable companies don't like- DSL companies don't care).

If they bitch.. what good is it going to do them? They lose a customer.

Actually, you might want to be careful with that server. I'll explain in a minute, but first: CABLE MODEMS MAKE SH|TTY SERVERS!
They just aren't optimized for it, and the whole shared bandwidth thing makes for very unstable pings.
OK, now why you don't want to run a dedicated server:
Most ISP's (roadrunner is one of them) allow a 24/7 connection and call it unlimited. However, they put a restriction on it that no one really knows about because no one reads ALL the fine print. You are restricted to around 20GB of data transferred (that's for both in and out, not 20GB in and 20GB out) per month. If you start going over that, they assume you are either running a large business website, or a warez or porn site. Since 99.9999% of the population never comes even close to that kind of thoroughput, it's usually not an issue. But when someone does, they slap you with all kinds of excessive use fees, and start demanding that you upgrade to a business level service. So be careful. Their excessive use fines aren't cheap, and a dedicated 16-20 player server with a strong, steady ping can easily hit that 20GB limit.

Just a little reality check on the wonderful "unlimited access" idea.

why thank you. I like to stay informed. Sure, I'm up for a game at any time. If you've got any kind of broadband, we're close enough that it should be almost like a LAN. Just e-mail me, or ICQ me # 7262679

BTW, D66, I think I'm about the only person in this forum who got your Ronnie Mervus sig.

Cable servers are usually crappy due to bandwidth restrictions and high packet loss. Plus, most cable ISP's have a 128k upstream limit too - so you'd be no better off. Also, if you carefully read the Customer Service Agreement, it states that you may *not* run any form of dedicated server (games/ftp etc). Typically they will immediately cancel your service if they discover that you're running a server - blah.
