Hosting a LAN party. Question about CD Key checks...

Hi everyone,

Got an upcoming LAN party going down at work and I'm trying to get UT2k3 used as our FPS game. I'm the only one who really plays it out of the group and I own the only copy. Does anyone know if 2k3 will check for valid/duplicate CD-Key's on LAN games? No intention to play online here, just a day of fun with friends.

Yes, I realize this violates my license agreement but I consider this case to be sort of a "demo". =) If they like it maybe I can convince them to buy a copy!

i am not 100% sure, but i think it is possible. as long as none of the computers are connected to the internet then the master server at epic wont be able to check the cd keys. however this is just a guess, i could be completely wrong.

From my experience you may have problems. I have had 3 computers online, on the same server, with the same copy installed with the same CD keys and never had a problem. I have done that many times.

However, in attempting to run a LAN game, 2 out the 3 are kicked out with the error message "Invalid CD Key" or "CD key in use."

Figure that one out.

You can't run multiple computers with the SAME CD-Kay....you can however use a keygen to make different keys, as long as the server doesn't advertise with the master server.

You can always put the demo of 2k3 on all the machines.

Little dumbed down, but you won't have to fuss with keys and such.

I installed my 2k3 at my dad's house with the same cd key and we play online together with patch 2225. Hrmmm, well i'm baffled to why it's not doing the cd key checks for us so I can't say it won't for you.

For a strictly LAN game I'm quite sure you can have all the same CD-key.
As long as you don't go on-line the CD-key does not matter.

If all else fails, make sure you have a copy of the demo on CD as a backup. You'll at LEAST get to play.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info all. In the end I'll go for a two pronged attack. Install everyone with a KEYGEN and just play locally, if need be use the demo in a pinch.

I'd really like the full version so they can see everything the game has to offer. Some of them are fairly new to FPS's so I though some Invasion might be a good team MOD to play.

Cheers!
