I intend to work on at least one HL2 mod this time around, hopefully once my current project at work dies down, I can get around to learning the HL2 editor. (Mapping / scripting). I'm looking to get promoted to a designer soon, so any extra experience is always good.

Colony 8 sounds like the movie 'Outland' ... with an 'epic' scope.
Nice idea, too bad it's going to sink faster than a rock because it's filled with too many impossible features. Sure ... it's not impossible to do some of the work before the engine & capabilities are known, but the given that the core design of any mod will depend on what can & can't be done it's not exactly smart to plan & design everything. In fact those that plan everything are just as likely to fail as those that don't ...

When i saw "A_Rimmelister" as the last poster in this thread, i excpected some wonderful enthusiam-breaking comments, with this unmatched and unique "guys i know what i'm talking about better than any of you" tone.

I'm overwhelmed by your support Rimmelister, I truelly am. I'm sure many mods before us were full of 'Impossible Features' and have gotten off the ground.
Also the core design of this mod is revolving around the story. I don't care if the game can do everything we want it to (even though we've seen just about all the best features on the E3 videos) we can still tell a story. So NER!

Exactly.Colony8 will be strongly oriented towards single-player, and single-player requires a solid background to be convincing. Not saying more

I kinda agree with A_Rimmerlister on a point. Ambitious mods are more likely to fail (well, they nearly always fail). Starting a mod with lots of different ideas never helps. Focus only on 1 or 2 and add more with time

Don't take me wrong we won't be starting off aiming for the final version. I agree aiming to high leads you straight down. We will start small, but what we're saying on the site etc is the idea for the mod in total. Of course we will start off concentrating on getting a couple of weapons, maybe a single map etc and working it out slowly.

It cant hurt to get a big design doc together before the project starts, as long as you make yourself internal milestones to work towards to keep the project on track. Set dates for getting key functionality into the game, if it cant be done you need to find out ASAP so you can change the design to accomadate for this.
