Good read...not a whole lot of new info here, but some cool stuff.

My original thinking on Unreal was that it would be a sort of massive multiplayer action game, with online levels linked via portals and forming part of an ever-growing world expanding both through our efforts and the community's, much more open-ended than games like (at the time) Ultima online.

*tears* ... Maybe in UW :P

I remember that there was a 'portal map' in Unreal, filled with portals that didn't link to anything. That must have been a leftover from that original idea.
