somewhere; sometime?
You had to be around when Tomb Raider first came out to appreciate how incredible the game was.
I was around.

I even remember getting a Tomb Raider demo disk in one of my Playstation magazines. but I never played it, and never played the game itself. at the time I remember thinking it was a gimmick because the main character had massive boobs and short-shorts. seemed like one of those games that people only liked because they were 13 years old and certain camera angles were like softcore porn.

I dunno. just didn't spark my interest.

That's called missing out.

But otherwise yeah, the huge boobs were a gimmick.

Tomb Raider was an incredible game. Incredible. Exploring forgotten ancient Egyptian temples is one of the best things ever in games. I love the Anniversary remake.

The new TR may be okay, but I'll miss the classical Indiana Jones-like adventure flair, which for me kind of made the game.

At the boobs. I never found the old Lara hot, boobs as large as Egyptian corner stones, basically dude-ish.
I love the way they reinvented her in TR: Legend, so sexy. Boobs still a lil too large, perhaps just the kevlar bra.

Tomb Raider one of THE games.

Word.
I loved the exploration side of it and just the fact that I could stand still for a bit and look around at my surroundings - just take it all in.
The locations were really magical and atmospheric.
I still rate the audio as best in any game - distant ambient noises and the musical score when you discovered new areas was just sublime - they had this classical harp music plunking in the background and it was really nicely put together.
Time hasn't been kind to the graphics though, they are rather crude by today's standards but back then, they were state of the art.
Just shows how far we've come in that regard.

Edit:

Here is the opening theme - brings back a lot of memories - great stuff.

Great music.

The things that really stood out for me in the original Tomb Raider were the organic and realistic approach to mechanics. There was basically no HUD, Lara would just aim at what's in front of her, today everything needs to be marked, pointed out and highlighted with crosshairs and icons. Sure, this really needs to be sometimes in some games, but in TR you were seeking for information about the world in the world itself, that is great.
Also the physical element stood in contrast to the static overly effective movement system of, let's say the Quake games. If pushing quads Lara needed to move back, take a short break and then push again, until job was done. When she'd grab an edge, she wasn't teleporting up, but took some time to gain strength and pull herself up. Stuff like this added to the gameplay immersion. When I look at that new Metal Gear game, the character hops around like a Moskito on dope, disgusting.
The art of pace was great in TR. It had fast pace and slow pace in the right moments.

By the way, the first three titles are available on GOG.com:

GOG games are usually optimized to work on modern machines, so it's a good chance to play them again. I'm going to grab that at some point.

Yes. Just like a real cyborg ninja!

Re: Tomb Raider: From the trailers it looks like I'll just get to watch Lara suffer grueling accidents and horrific violence over and over in their little QTE gauntlet.

No thanks.

Where least expected
Why consider buying it due to a nice cinematic trailer? Nearly every game that starts out with a nice cinematic trailer to pump in those preorders turns out to be shit, along with the long list of games that have been rebooted over the past year.

Pretty much. It amazes me that the game has been preordered so much blindly on steam that all 3 preorder bonuses have been unlocked.

It all comes down to us in the end and if Tomb Raider ends up being shit, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Preordering blindly? Based on cinematic trailers? Nope. There have been 1 hour gameplay videos floating around on youtube since early December. And not that I watched all of it (don't wanna be spoiled), but the clips I have seen look absolutely fantastic.

There's also a 3 hour demo that's been getting passed around which has been receiving universal acclaim. So it's shaping up to look like a mighty fine game.

^ QTEs have been confirmed to be used very sparingly.

First review is in from Games Master magazine. 90/100. 10-15 hours campaign, 20 hours if you fully explore the island.

Also note that Square is lifting the review embargo tomorrow, a full week before release. That shows that they're super confident with this title.

They're also giving PC gamers the special treatment with much more detailed textures and DX11 effects. Color me excited.

I'm very interested in something different for Tomb Raider. So far this game is looking good.

Reviews are in with the 360 version ranking 88% based on 18 reviews.

IGN gives it a 9.1 saying:

Tomb Raider is well-written, sympathetic, exciting, beautiful and just incredibly well-made. The single-player rarely makes a mis-step, and though Lara's quick transformation into a hardened killer seems at odds with the narrative at first, the game quickly moves past it. It is a superb action game that brings a new emotional dimension to one of gaming's most enduring icons, and repositions her alongside Nathan Drake at the top of gaming's action-hero heirarchy.

It's clearly very different from the previous Tomb Raider games, so if that's what you're expecting, prepare to be very disappointed.

I am aware of the difference, so no expectations will be broken here and I am aware that this is a new beginning for Lara and the "Tomb Raider" stuff will follow in the future, but in this game it is not about that. Still, "Tomb Raider" is not just a flashy title, it is a precise description of the core element of the entire franchise, so I hope there will be a t least a bit of tomb raiding in TR2013.

I saw a game play video, it's nice, I like how you must aim the weapons for yourself now. In the previous games, as a PC/mouse user, I felt a bit underloaded during the shoot outs.
Eidos is one of the very few big companies that still makes good games (now and then), so I'm not too pessimistic, but still, I know it is likely not going to be like the original and that is a shame, because the original concept is rock solid and is what made me a fan at the first place (as a great archeology enthusiast).

Indeed. I'd find it somewhat confusing if Tomb Raider does not involve the raiding of any tombs...

Edit: IGN gave it 91/100 despite admitting that the entire first hour is QTEs. The game story also (somewhat predictably and disappointingly) does not involve raiding tombs.

Tomb Raider is a little self-indulgent at the beginning – the first hour is a sequence of carefully scripted set-pieces and, yes, a cavalcade of button-mashing QTEs.

Since this is an origin story, I am more interested in how she got her big ass titties later on in life. Obviously she must have been tomb raiding after this to afford those huge knockers.
