A handshake is how you greet somebody you work with. If you're talking about a real friend, hugs are the best. I'm a proponent of strong manly hugs between male friends.

Ok - I see the "classic" greetings are still first choice.
Though bows look kinda stupid imo.
All I can say is that also strangers should be greeted.
I too often experience people who walk into you as if you werent there.
A better way is to watch them and wait to give free passing.
Also pretty much fun is to imitate their foot sounds -
Or to stalk behind someone stepping in his foots.

Why would you talk to stranger?
They only give you candy and strange tasting drinks.

Youre absolutely right greeting isnt always for "befriending" - it also works the other way.
For example if you recognize a dump which tries to get near your ass
and you turn around and slap or something.
But that just needs some training.
