Butterfly Effect 2-4/10

While trading on the mechanic from the original film this story has none of the inventiveness and tension of the first. Probably worth watching once if you saw the original. If you haven't seen the original it would probably not make a lot of sense.

The Aviator-9/10

Great acting. Great directing. Great choice of music. This is what Baz Luhrmann's Great Gatsby could have been if it had been made by a good director who isn't a total fuckwit.

Gravity 3D 7.5/10

Whilst it is very good and makes a few brave narrative choices, I don't think it merits some of the reviews that it has been achieving.

Having clearly taken a lot of care and attention to getting the details right, the residual mistakes (as opposed to dramatic licence) stand out sharply and look like carelessness. A pity.

3D didn't add a lot except for the eyewatering second impact event.

The Family 5/10

(AKA Mr & Mrs Smith are married with kids)

Of its kind, this is a pretty decent outing.

It still suffers from the same structural issue that affects all such films - it is hard to feel sympathy or identify with a stone cold mafia killer. Expanding the focus to include the family works a bit but is let down by the comedic requirement for the wife to be a pyromaniac and the kids to be fledgling hustlers.

Routinely mildly amusing, it drags a bit early on and often felt like a wasted opportunity - I think there is a TV series here and compressing it all into under 2 hours meant that chances were missed.

Things picked up a bit when the mafia finally did turn up in the Normandy village.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire - 9/10

Excellent. Goes in a darker direction than the first and manages to stay fresh despite similar subject matter. The new arena was awesome. Gone were the cheesy and badly acted "damn you, you scared me half to death" moments from the first film. They also gave the camera to someone who didn't have parkinsons this time. Can't wait for the next one!'

edit - If Jennifer Lawrence could pull of an english accent, I definitely think she could play Lara Croft (2013 version). I definitely got Tomb Raider vibes with her and that bow.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire - 7.5/10

Better than the last one. First half of the movie is a bit slow but still interesting. Jennifer Lawrence is good (not that I thought she wouldn't be). I enjoyed PSH as the new gamemaster or whatever.

Nothing really to complain about, solid all the way through.

I thought this film got seriously heavy and seriously dark over the first film really quickly. Compelling storytelling. Very well done I'm looking forward to the wrap up in part three.

Independence Day-7/10

Who hasn't seen this flick a million times? It's still a very watchable War of the Worlds type of vibe. Huge destruction scenes and very spectacular. An easy film to revisit.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader-8/10

A great end to the trilogy of films. Good acting and good visuals. It has a lot of emotion. I haven't seen this since I first saw it when it came out at the cinema. It stands up well to a second viewing.......

Carrie (2013) 6/10

Effective if somewhat linear thriller (more thriller than horror). Ansel Elgort was very good as the prom date. Creepy when it needed to be creepy, tense when it needed to be tense, I enjoyed it. Marks deducted for the unnecessary use of (very poor) CGI blood.

Marks added for not overstaying its welcome.

Don Jon 4/10

Slight tale of how a man emotionally crippled by an addiction to porn learns the meaning of, if not true love, at least love.

Whilst not without moments of genuine comedy (his family are a nightmare), too many of the characters are just annoying.

I also found the narrative style quite irritating - the first half of the film was told in a fashion that left one expecting the character to "wake up" and rewind to the true state of affairs.

The Adjustment Bureau-7/10

A good story and the film has it's moments. It just doesn't seem to come across with the power that a lot of other Philip K. Dick stories do when they are made into films. It seemed a better film on this second viewing though........

Watchmen (Director's Cut)-8/10

One of my favourite films. Honestly I could see little difference between this and the cinema release. (Perhaps I wasn't paying close enough attention).

Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug 8.5/10

Better than the first, still a bit boring in some places. Didn't know why they added Legolas, scenes with Gandalf which are not in the book where good. Cumberbatch does a great job as the voice of Smaug.
