The very month that UT and Quake III appeared last year, I found myself at a crossroads. One way led to gaming goodness with multiple modes of play, the other road led to levels full of the same colors I've been staring at since 1996. At the time I had a Savage 4 video card, so the unfortunately obvious choice was Q3.
I've enjoyed Quake3 online play at times but the weapons are too random and clumsy. ("A sofisticated weapon for a more civilized age.") The splash damage (especially the rocket launcher) is way too unpredicatable. The RailGun is practailly worthless online if you have any ping at all, and the Plasma Gun is a sorry ass weapon. I've had people kill me up close with a machinegun (base weapon) when I had the Plasma Gun with full ammo. That's BULLS**T.
The scenery in Quake3 is nothing to brag about either, as I mentioned above, with browns and reds prevailing. DM12 is a masterpiece (well, except it has that ****ing BFG) and it's a shame that more levels like it weren't made. All those user made maps and models are worthless as well since most servers are pure and don't allow them.
Many graphics vendors (like the deceased Diamond Multimedia) go above and beyond reference drives (unlike S3 who made the reference and retail versions both
) I pity your attitude, since I'm heading in the opposite direction. Quake3 is stale and moldy, it's basically Quake and Quake2 combined, and the Quake3World forum is a joke, especially Rants and Raves (you can find me there as Dark Karma).
So enjoy those games of Quake, and tell Duhard and Teknoice I said Kiss My @$$
