Did a search and couldnt find anything on this, what is the Acogs practical application in the U.S. armed forces. I wouldnt think it would be issued to grunts for cost reasons. Nor would I think sniper teams would want it because of its smaller calibar (m16 mounted) and limited range compared with a real sniper rifle. So what is its use in the U.S. armed forces, is one issued to one man in each standard squad somewhat like the M203?

well im assuming it would be chosen not so much "Assigned" because if you assinged it to the wrong guy he would probably suck with it
more asssumptions:
they wouldnt take it for missions in small enclosed places
they wouldnt have more then a "few" with an acog in a team or else thered be a concern for lack of close quarter awareness

Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight. The first two words of the name should explain its use.Its not an average everday item that common soldiers get to use.If im not mistaken Infiltration is based on Special and Elite Forces not just your average everyday army.

Issued to a platoon or squad's designated marksman or sharpshooter for certain situations, most notably Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) or Civil Disturbance (CD) - this being mainly the National Guard's role rather than Regular Army but it still applies to Regular Army.

Some sniper or scout-sniper teams issue the spotter an M16 equipped with an ACOG or an AN/PVS4 NVS. Dependant upon their unit SOI/SOP (standard operating instructions/procedures) or TOE (table of organization & equipment).

IIRC, St0rmcaller has previously stated that USMC issues one per squad, and Tiffy has sad that in the U.K. armed forces every line infantryman gets one.

I believe Tiffy was referring to the SUSAT. Same concept as the ACOG, think the zoom is 1x or 1.5x? Ask Tiffy.

And yes, all of them get it. It's built onto that funny little green and plastic toy thing they call a gun. ;)

Those kinda look like 3-9x Unertl rubber armored scopes....but I could be wrong.

**edit**

Upon further inspection of said photo: they're not rubber armored scopes, but they do look like they're 3x-9x variable power scopes...maybe even 4x-12x. Those look like modified or improved Harris bipods... are they?

Looks like the improved swivels by Harris.. SLM model?

bastardb: And yes, you can get them for anything. Just buy the correct adapter for the gun.

So are ACOG's used more in MOUT simply to identify targets when you have a bunch of non-combatants running around or is it because there are lots of urban sniper positions you could be threatened from or what?

Around here, ACOGs are issued to designated marksmen, one per platoon, mounted mostly on 14.5" barrel M16's, sometime on full-lenght ones. Their job is to provide accurate fire at longer distances while operating with their platoon.

Russians use SVD for basically the same job.

SUSAT is a 4x optical scope, with a nice little pointer illuminated by a tritium source at night instead of the cross hairs in INF. The reason its issued to every line infantry soldier is that the British Army tends to engage at longer ranges than most armies and also tends to accurate markmanship as apposed to weight of fire to neutralise enemy forces.

All Canadian infantrymen are issued C7A1 automatic rifles with flattop receivers and Elcan sights. They are also fitted to all the C9 squad automatic weapons. Iron sights are still made available for all weapons.
