Robin Hood-6.5/10

An interesting origin story. The film has Ridley Scott's usual attention to detail but some of the dialogue is pretty poorly written and predictable.

Russell Crowe, in my opinion, is lacklustre in the film . He wanders around seemingly not knowing if he should be acting or producing the picture. A bit of a zombie act from him. Blanchette, while looking as gorgeous as ever, is also a bit understated in her performance but at least shows more emotion than Crowe.

Not a bad film but not Scott's best film by far.

The life story of Howard Marks.
I can't tell if you need to have read the book to really enjoy it because I have but Rhys Ifans is brilliant in it & it's pretty good story regardless.

Beneath Hill 60-7/10

A very well staged World War One drama about a real-life situation on the Western Front.

The script seemed a bit vague in places leaving the story a bit confused but the depiction of life during wartime was well done and very horrifying.

The story is basically about this:

1914-15

Hill 60 was a low rise on the southern flank of the Ypres Salient and was named for the 60 metre contour which marked its bounds. Hill 60 was not a natural highpoint, but was created as a result of the digging of the nearby railway cutting. As such it was a strategically significant area of high ground. The hill had been captured by the Germans on December 10, 1914 from the French army. After the Race for the Sea, it was obvious the Hill had to be retaken. A great deal of fighting around Hill 60 was underground.

In the first operation of its kind by the British, the Corps of Royal Engineers specialist tunnelling companies laid six mines by April 10, 1915. These mines (together with other unfinished mines) were filled with around 1,000,000 pounds (450,000 kg) of explosives, with the resulting explosions ripped the heart out of the hill over a period of some 10 seconds. It flung debris almost 300 feet (91 m) into the air and scattered it for a further 300 yards (270 m) in all directions.

1st Australian Tunnelling Company

The 1st Australian Tunnelling Company took over mining operations in November 1916, led in part by Captain Oliver Woodward CMG MC.

At 03:10 on 7 June 1917, at the start of the Battle of Messines, 19 mines filled with 450,000 kg of explosives, were detonated under the German lines, demolishing a large part of the hill and killing many German soldiers occupying the trenches. Although only 19 of the 21 mines exploded, it created one of the largest explosions in history, reportedly able to be felt in London and Dublin.

A memorial to the Australian troops killed here during the course of the war was later placed at the site.

What the guys went through and how and where they fought
(fighting the enemy in breached mine shafts)
is pretty damn scary.......

Goodfellas-7.5/10

I have seen this flick before some time ago. Based on a true story it's pretty compelling mobster/mafia movie storytelling.

I wasn't intending to watch it again but I couldn't turn it off.

The slick for this DVD bills the film as "UK's answer to Gran Torino" and, yes, there are some similarities in the premise.

However:

There is no good kid in the story that needs saving. Pretty much everyone in the film is totally f***ed in their own way.

Also you get much closer to the characters of the villains than you do in Gran Torino.

That, along with the very British style of film-making, have made this flick a completely different animal; in my opinion.

The story is supported by excellent music.

I should rate it lower because it's not high-brow cinema, but this is another pretty good action flick. Bruce Willis is his usual Die-Hard-like self and the rest of the cast consists of good actors that do a decent job. Incredibly loosely based on the comic (connected by main character name and general initial plot setup only), but seeing as I don't know the comic I couldn't really compare anything. Well paced blast of a movie though, I enjoyed it.

Predators (2010)

This movie starts off well enough for the type of movie it is, and I was into it. There was a great diversity of characters in this movie, most of which seemed very smart. Well at least smarter than your usual characters in AVP, and I liked a lot of them. But they mostly die in the same cliched ways it's annoying. The movie is good for the first part, but the last part gets more and more disappointing and there's more and more "convenience devices" used all over. Finally the conclusion is quite frankly disappointing.

Clash of the Titans-6/10

Good points: Big movie storytelling of the classic myths. The visuals do the story justice for the most part.

The supporting cast are really good in their characters.

Bad points: The story does get a bit hard to follow in places thanks to the scripting.

Depiction of the gods on Olympus is lame and wrong, in my opinion. They look more like action figures from a cheap Japanese super hero show that is trying to rip off the Justice league.

Major cast parts are basically miscast and very weak.

As for Worthington the delivery he used in Avatar isn't suited to the really heroic role of Perseus. He really is miscast and I can't imagine any hero of Greek mythology sounding like they come from "Aw-Stray-Lee-Yah" every time he opens his mouth.

They should have gotten him to moderate/neutralise his accent... a lot.

Infernal Affairs 8.5/10

Top-notch thriller with Tony Leung and Andy Lau. Not to be missed.

The Departed 7/10

Pretty good thriller with Matt Damon and Leonardo Di Caprio but it is a mystery as to why it won so many Oscars.

In its own right it is quite a good film but even with the example of IA to guide it, most changes were for the worse. Where IA had a simple and direct explanation for back story, TD went on at convoluted length and to no great benefit. Our understanding of the characters and their situation was not improved. The longer exposition of events and the backstory did not serve any useful function other than to generate gainful employment for the residents of Holywood. In a couple of places, it felt as though star power had led to scenes being inserted with the purpose of softening the characters.

Make no mistake, TD is a good film but you can watch IA, enjoy a better film and have 50 minutes of your life back to do something else.

(And Tony Leung and Andy Lau ran away with the acting honours).

4.5 on IMDB. Megan Fox can't help make a movie good so it seems.

"NOT THE ****ING PYRAMIDS AGAIN!!" She said to Michael Bay.
"DON'T ****ING TELL ME I HAVE TO KISS THIS GUY!!" She probably said to Jimmy Hayward.

Sherlock Holmes-7/10

An interesting steam punk type of take on the Conan Doyle characters.

Both Downey Jnr. and Jude Law were good in their roles.

Not brilliant, but an entertaining enough flick......

Or as I would put it:

Sherlock Holmes. I was offended within seconds. Sherlock Holmes is neither Indy nor Buffy nor James Bond. Or fücking Neo, for that matter. It's such a decisive break of character that I can in no way get over it. I wish the MTV generation would stop watching movies and... stick to MTV, so that movie makers would stop catering to them. One-liners, music video cuts, slo-mos, superficial humour - everything that does not fit is present. Entertaining? Yes, to some degree. Visually stunning? Most definitely. A disgrace? Yes, all the way. (And a great, great outro.) 5/10

Das Leben der Anderen. A great effort of dealing with an aspect of Germany's past that hasn't received as much attention in film as the supposed everyday life in the GDR. It features beautiful photography, but truly shines in the acting department. The whole cast fills out their excellently written characters to the fullest, and Ulrich Mühe, who died a year after making this, leads them on in a haunting performance. 10/10

Arsenic And Old Lace Chaaaarge! Wit, meta-humour and a, shall we say, expressive Cary Grant (Ye Gods, there is another one!). Insanity clearly runs in the family, oh dear. (Dramatic instrumental music.) 10/10

Shadow Of A Doubt. Watch this for the brilliant camera work in the very beginning, during the introductory phase of Joseph Cotton's character - it loses a little of its strength after the film moves to the location of Santa Rosa though. Besides the usual suspense, the character of Herbert builds up a stranger kind of uncertainty. Be careful what you wish for, for there are enough unordinary things around the corner (like the very, very odd barwoman). A great depiction of a threat to the American family that sometimes develops a little too fast. 8/10

Knjiga Rekorda Šutke. A documentary about the inhabitants of Šutka, the only municipality in the world where Roma constitute the majority. An entire town full of odd and likable characters, each offering an own view of religion, life and music. Everyone is a champion in something. Ali Bajram: "None of my colleagues can make better music videos. My videos are superb. In every minute, every second there are countless effects." Beneath the hilarity, there is the occasional glimpse into the poor living conditions. I had to flinch at the treatment of animals in this movie a lot though: there's slaughter and there's animal fighting. 9/10

But no worse than the average Basil Rathbone pot-boiler?

Sure, it's non-canonical but as a matter of character (as opposed to plot and setting) I thought it reasonably true to the original (different but true).

That said, I preferred the recent BBC outing in which, more than 100 years after the original was written, "You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive." could morph into "Afghanistan or Iraq?" and still have resonance.

Meh, it's like shakespeare, it's been done so many times to do it the same way as everyone else would be wasting everyones time.

i thought it was fine and the character was presented okay, I was genuinely suprised tbh as i had low hopes what with the director being Guy Ritchie and all.
