Knight and Day
I didn't want to see it because the trailer I saw when I was in Robin Hood made it look so horrible, but a friend "had" it so I watched it with her and I have to say, it wasn't half bad! Not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a fun spoof of over-the-top spy movies ala Mission Impossible 2 or the Bond series.
It could have been even better if they had kept up the slapstick comedy like in the fight on the plane or when he lands on the hood of her car. As the movie progresses it kind of loses this aspect and drifts more into (bad) serious spy movie territory and rom-com land. All in all, not a great movie, but definitely watchable. I can at least recommend catching it when it's on TV.

Wow a perfect rip off from Cyrano de Bergerac.
I hope you didn't like him because he was original.

It's funny of course, but nothing new.

Well it's just one of the first things that came to mind when I read his name. That, and the airport car rental scene of "planes, trains and automobiles". Him teaming up with John candy was pure fireworks. (not early period either, but still... the movie becomes too sentimental later on.. regrettably)

Did see "the man with two brains" and "all of me" back in the 80s. Good movies. (unlike the tree amigos imo) Hmm.. I forgot he starred in "little shop of horrors".

Piranha - 7/10 I don't know if it really deserves a 7 but it was pretty good, there were some fun scenes, some extremely over the top gory parts and some female nudity.
I would have preferred not to see the entire death scene of the porno guy, those of you who have seen the movie probably know what I'm referring too.
Extra points for the very well made wet t-shirt contest and all it's gory glory (no pun intended).
PS, I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone with a weak stomach

The Expendables - 4/10 I had pretty high expectations for this one, well I wasn't expecting a masterpiece but still. Plot is weak, action is not as awesome as it should have been and well there's not really anything interesting about it except a few decent action scenes.

The Other Guys - 7/10 The first half of the movie is awesome and hillarious, pretty much anything Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg made me laugh. Samuel L Jackson is also hillarious along with his partner Dwayne Johnson (The Rock). But the other half of the movie isn't as good as it starts to feel kinda slow and boring, might just be my opinion though. Same goes for another movie by the same director (also featuring Will Ferrell), Talladega Nights - The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, which could have been kind of a masterpiece but is ruined by it's length.

Still though, good movie.

Synecdoche, New York - 2/10 Hmm ok, I kinda like Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, masterpiece) and Phillip Seymour Hoffman is probably one of the better actors working today. But well, this was too wierd even more so than Mullholland Drive (Imo) and it's no fun watching a movie if you suddenly don't understand **** of what's going on, well not for me anyways. Other than that, Hoffman plays his role well but that's pretty much it for me. I guess you either love movies like these or hate them

An Education - 4/10 Good acting but oh so boooooooooooooooooring.

Munich - 8/10 I love Spielbergs movies so I had to watch this one. It's a little over 160 minutes long which is a little too much, some scenes feels unnessesary and the movie could probably have been trimmed down to 2 hours. It's a great move to include some original footage of the tragic event. Eric Bana in the lead works surprisingly well but it's Daniel Craig who takes the price here :p

(for those of you who aren't familiar with the movie, it's based on the happenings at the Olympic Games in Munich 1972 when 11 Israeli athletes where taken hostage and then later killed by palestinian terrorists)

The Hangover - 8/10

Yeah I was a little late in catching this movie. It definitely isn't the end all best damn comedy movie everyone was making it out to be, but it was good . A few really good lol moments, but most were just slight chuckles.

Stand by me: 10

How simple can be so incredibly powerfull. Always liked this movie, always moved me. Partially nostalgia, because the first time I watched this was back in the 80s. And because I can't find any real flaws in it. The acting is also superb. Man, watching River Phoenix do his thing, shame he passed on so early.
Top class.

Mystic River. It's very, very dark, getting more so towards the end and into its depth. The violence will never stop, whether there is a reason or not. Everybody's acting is superb, and Sean Penn is one of the best actors of the past decade. The lighting and locations add what the film needs to function the way it does. Peter Jackson should see it over and over again, taking notes and perhaps taking note of how this one excels where his "The Lovely Bones", treating similar ground, failed horribly. 10/10

JCVD. The funny point of the intro sequence was obvious from miles away, but it was still fun to watch. It's a cleverly constructed movie about the great expectations from everyone that Van Damme just can't match, with some nice laughs inbetween (Steven Seagal cutting off his ponytail to grab a role? I'm amused.) What I didn't like as much was the monologue where he's explaining himself, breaking the fourth wall - all the content of that speech could have been conveyed by other means. But let me be more precise: I didn't like the instrument of meta-monologue (or whatever one would call it), the way he delivered it was excellent and touching. Yes, Jean-Claude Van Damme developed serious acting skills - as long as he's acting as himself, that is. 9/10

Yôjinbô. Times have changed in Japan, and the lone ronin holding on to now outdated values is being overtaken by them - and wages one last stand. The characters of the tough yet human samurai and his modern adversary are excellently introduced, which is aided impressively by the shot setups (like the lone samurai in the deserted road). 10/10

L'Homme Qui Aimait Les Femmes. The light-hearted opening sequence sets the tone for the first half of the movie. It's the story of a lovable "man who loves women", which is decidedly not the same as a lady-killer (although he does have the same skills) and the women he encounters, told in episodes. Things get more serious in the second half when, through flashbacks to the man's childhood (Truffaut once again taking up his favourite theme), and an unexpected and somewhat unfitting episode it becomes apparent why he cannot connect to women in a deeper way. Charles Denner was an excellent choice for the lead. 8/10

Boxhagener Platz. This one mostly follows the formula that previous comedy-dramas dealing with life in the GDR laid out. The characters very much fit into the scheme and are nothing original, but what makes this film a little more interesting is that the comedy that prevails throughout most of it is seriously and believably broken up by criticism of the state. 6/10

Machete - 9/10

Another turn your brain off and don't take seriously(Kantham) movie. The movie doesn't hesitate to tell you what side it is on about the whole immigration issue Arizona is currently dealing with, but that is hardly an issue as the violence is the key contributor in this film. There are more beheadings in the first 5 minutes than most R-rated flicks. The only negatives I can think of are Jessica Alba confirmed that she was wearing digitally removed clothing during her shower scene, and Lindsay Lohan had a body double during her lesbo scene. Message to Alba, get over yourself. And Lohan, anyone who can use google has seen your bits so you can suck it as well.

On a final note, it was glorious to see Steven Seagal again. Him and Trejo really stole the show.

Chocolat - 8/10

Watched this one with the wife last night and was pleasantly surprised. The movie had a fun story and a great cast (Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Carrie-Anne Moss, Alfred Molina). It's set in a small village in France, and it's gotta do with Chocolate being made around Lent.

Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage: 9/10

"Celebrate the remarkable 40-year career of influential Canadian rock band Rush with this music documentary, which details the band's formation, long list of hit albums, struggles with critics, musical evolution and present day identity. Featuring interviews with well-known Rush fans such as Billy Corgan, Gene Simmons and Jack Black, this Rush extravaganza will thrill fans with its awesome archival footage and soundtrack."

Would have gave it a 10/10 if it were longer. Apparently there's a lot more archival footage available, I'd like to have seen more of it. Bluray extras are awesome!

The trailers harked at laugh a minute moments and action but used up the joke machine about 20 minutes in.
Tries hard to recapture the 80's action/comedy film formula and to some extent, succeeds, only to run out of funnies about half way through.
I don't know what Val Kilmer was thinking when he decided to take this on but to me it only advertised how fat this dude has become.

Kiss Of The Dragon - 8/10

Fairly old flick that deserved a re-visit just to remind me how cool this film is.
Jet Li under-plays himself here in a well thought out story that could only have one possible outcome.
Bridget Fonda plays a really accessible character that resonates with Li in such a way that he feels compelled to undertake an errand of mercy on her behalf by beating the crap out of everyone he encounters.
Very stylish movie that has great pacing.

Gorgeous camerawork, great mix of action and snark. Milla in barely if any clothes. Movie rocks.

These guys.

As for me, I like it a lot. I like a lot of movies that are rated as The Fifth Element is on IMDB, perhaps it's because I prefer to be entertained than have a brain freeze over existential questions when I'm watching a movie.

So I like Stargate, Sky Fighters (I watched it in French though, no guarantees on the translation), Pandorum, Death Race, and so on. ;)
