I don't mind the discussion of what weapons/rounds you feel are better and why, but this talk about country vs country is meaningless, pointless, and always ends up in jokes about yur mamma /infopop/emoticons\icon_wink.gif so stear clear of that discussion please.

Positive about that country-quarrel-stop, Sir.
BTW:
For a poor, little, Austrian, who never learned English well, what does POS/POC stand for..(I though it might be Piece-of-Shit/Piece-of-Crap, but ain't sure..)
The story of the ARmy telling the M16 was a self-cleaning rifle I heard too. Think that did it's work out there in the jungle in Vietnam - at least some good troopers have been killed by that story.
The other thing I'd like to ask:
According to my information the M16 used 18 round mags, not 16 round. Is that correct? As usual, when I pose such a question, the source is not totally secure.

Are the US really trade their M16A2s for the M4? I thought it would just be a replacement for SMGs, or a weapon for troops, who don't need a full-power AR. Aren't they going to put the M16A3 or A4 in service?

some many questions, so few answers..

Officially The M-16 had a 20 round mag...but if you put 20rnds in say goodbye to the spring in the mag and POS POC is what u thought it was.

Good to know my English is not that bad.
What I wanted to say about the 18-round mag is, that, according to my information, it officially was a 18-round mag. Just everybody was used to put 20 rounds in, and since they fitted in, it was possible - but damaged the spring.

You're all incorrect on the magazines.

The M16 came issued with TWENTY-ROUND magazines. In the earlier days of Vietnam, platoons would get their ammunition in bulk. It would be dumped onto a tarp and several guys would sit around all day filling magazines.

After several hours of this mindless, repetitive task, one begins to lose count of how many rounds were stuck into the magazine already. The early 20-rounders were able to fit 21 rounds with a little convincing, but doing this would cause a malfunction. Thus the troops were ordered to underload their magazines by 2 rounds to avoid this.

Once ammunition started coming on stripper clips of 10 rounds, they began loading the full 20 rounds because they didn't need to count. There is NOTHING wrong with loading 20 rounds into a 20-round magazine

as for the other question...

(Correct me if I'm wrong Gryphon, as I don't know as much about guns as you do)

A carbine is a short rifle.

I believe they started using them in the 19th century on mounted cavalry. so instead of lugging around a full-sized rifle on horseback, they instead carried a smaller carbine.

Thanks Grandmaster of weaponry!
We all shall bow down and let your light shine upon us!

Boy, they had some reloading ALL mags? I wouldn't trust anyone to load my mag but me.

Hey, I knew it was either because:

a) They introduced bigger clips

b) The INF team is as lazy as the CS team, and just put the ammo amount at something wrong /infopop/emoticons\icon_wink.gif

From what a friend said though, the FN-P90 only has 47 rounds, not 50. Any comments?

ha- Id watch who you call lazy /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ill say it before and Ill say it again, one of the things that sets INF apart is the dedication to getting all of the firearms working as they do in real life, its amazing and the team deserves kudos for its hard work and research.

I actually happened across this thread in a google search for information about the F88 and the Steyr AUG. Sorry to bring it back from the dead, but I was wondering, has anyone heard of the new US carbine design, the XM-8? (X because it hasn't been field-tested yet) For those who have heard of it, what do you think? Does it have a chance? Will it be as effective in the field as is it in the factory?

It's a very lightweight, modular carbine/rifle with extremely good durability and reliability. It doesn't have the jamming problems of the M16 and the M4. It actually comes with a cleaning kit ( ) and, although not field tested yet, supposedly requires cleaning every 15 000 rounds. Cleaning every 10,000 rounds would ensure constant reliability. The barrel life of the M-4 is, I believe, only 8 000 rounds. In addition, the cleaning process takes approximately four minutes, while cleaning the M-4 takes ten or twelve.

This, combined with its incredible flexibility and customizability (modular design) make it superior to the M-4 and M-16 in every way.

Some complaints about it arise from the fact that it uses the NATO standard 5.56 x 45 mm rounds. It has become apparent in recent conflicts that soldiers are very unhappy with the performance of these rounds, which are used in both the M-4 and M-16, as they do not always incapacitate a target. The much smaller wound allows enemies with wounds in less important places to continue fighting. There are many in support of a larger round such as a 6.8 or 7.62mm. However, due to the very lightweight design of the M-8, the recoil from a larger round would be horrendous. There is speculation that the size is not the problem, but rather the type. This gun also takes, I believe, AK-47 ammo. I could be wrong on that, though.

The M-8 will soon be field tested with two brigades in Iraq, as well as a number of individuals.

Umm... who here actually owns the weapons in question?

Who here has actually fired, let alone attained proficency with said firearms?
