hey guys, i just recently switched over from low-resolution, low-detail texture D3D to chris donhal's enhanced OpenGL renderer with high-detail textures and INF has never looked more beautiful. i had no idea what i was missing out on!

however, doing so has really screwed up INF's audio in-game. the best way to describe it is as being muffled and distorted. i've ocasionally had this problem in the past (as i think most of us have), but simply restarting INF was the quick fix. unfortunately, INF refuses to be fixed so easily this time around. the problem is definitely related to the my video settings somehow.

does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix? thanks! :(

I know Creative standard XP driver (the one that comes with windows) did work fine with 3d3 in INF, but Opengl gave me the soundproblems you describe.

Updating to a newer Creative driver fixed it.

This is using a Soundblaster Live

Thanks for the tip Nuke, I'll give that a shot.

Also, another problem that's arose: I get a steady 40-50fps with these new OpenGL drivers, however from time to time (in-game) INF "freezes" for 10-15 seconds, then I can be on my merry way until the next freeze.

Also, I feel like it's more difficult to hit moving targets now (feels like there is some sort of lag); is this because I'm running settings higher than what my video card/computer are capable of? If so, why do I still somehow manage 40fps?

Thanks again

Maybe your videocard is running out of memory so it switches to the swap file on your HD which causes the jitter? The only time my INF ever freezes is when a Duke nake explodes on screen. Those smoke effects cause my PC to cry. Probably because they are 4xAA and 8xAnisotropic filtered. Do you have precaching on? Maybe that would help prevent stuttering?

I'm pretty sure I have pre-caching on; at least, whenever a map is loading, I get the "Precaching" text at the bottom of the screen...

My video card is a Radeon 9800 Pro (256mb) -- I thought this thing was supposed to be good? Is it possible it's running out of memory?

Haha, it looks good. With 256mb of memory, I would hope it's not running out of memory! You are running the new OGL drivers right? Are your settings correct? If you turn UseS3TC to FALSE, does your PC stop hanging? If so, then your card probably doesn't like hi-res textures. The strange thing is Chris programs his OGL driver with an ATI test card. There are features in his drivers that only ATI people can activate. It's surprising to see you have issues with a top line card like that.

Ok, this is a fun one...

The pre-cache actually causes more problems. It makes things slower. When I turned it off, things were immediately better.

About the sound?

Well fella, it seems it might be more complicated than that...

I've discovered that, apparently, INF and TS do not like each other. I've often times had my sound engine crash - which ultimately, drove me fucking insane. The sounds will be really 'crunchy' sounding. If you fire off a mag, it will sound like an Atari game - but as soon as you hit 'escape' and go back to the menu, you hear the reverbed sound, and it's fine...

The interesting thing is, that this only happens with INF. Not HL2 or UT2k4, or anything else I own.

I've found that, restarting INF, and, if you're lucky enough to have this not crash INF - alt-tabbing out and restarting TS fixed the problem.

Also, changing my settings back and forth from 'Direct Sound' to 'Wave' in TS doesn't hurt...

Basically, it's a crazy little bug. It could be caused by OGL I suppose - but then again, that wouldn't explain how I only encounter the problem when I run TS. Are you running TS at the same time? Or is this just INF by itself?

Try testing your theory out some more, and if you can prove that it's OGL - write to Chris and ask if he'd be willing to install this mess and try to fix the problem for us.

This also happened to me. I replaced OpenGLDrv.dll with chris donhal's version, and the sound became garbled - in both OpenGL and D3D. Put my backup in the system folder, and it was normal again. SB Live! 5.1 / Geforce3 here...

EDIT: The problem is gone after installing the creative drivers and patch - apparently was using microsoft drivers.

All sblive users should definitely try the FMOD sound driver i posted in development. it's performance is 80% better than that implemented Galaxy crap, my 32 channels actually work now, hardware sound actually works like it should and much much better stereo positioning.

My sound still gets fucked every once in a while, and I'm not even using a soundcard.

I'm using USB audio and Chris OGL.

I'm holding back on OAL until they create a few more releases.
