How do you solve this?

Im fuckin terrible at math. Is this shit hard for anyone else?

Judy had a number of raisins. After eating one, she gave half the remainder to her sister. After eating another raisin, she gave a third of what was left to her brother. Judy now had only six raisins left. How many raisins did she start with?

She has six.
She gave a third of what she had left before having six. That means she kept two thirds of what she had left. If six is two thirds, one third is three.
She had nine before giving to her brother.
She had ten before eating one.
She gave half to her sister. She kept the other half. A half is ten.
She had twenty before giving half to her sister.
She had twenty one before eating one.

She had twenty one raisins total.

How long did that take you to figure out?

Hmmmmm.
It's a trick question.
You always start off with nothing,
Till some one gives you some.
So the answer is 0 :D
Now I'm even more confused.

I don't know, maybe a minute? You have to read everything two or three times to understand it well, so about that time. Then it's figuring out with what to start. In this case since we only have the number at the end, we start with that. Then we work our way back up. I did that while writing it down. Then I went over it twice before posting.
Maybe five minutes max including writing.

62. It's always twice the previous number + 2, n -> 2*n + 2

Just translate the text into a formula, not that fuckin hard.

Code:
((x-1)/2-1)(2/3)=6            6   3   18
			      - x - = -  = 9
         /(2/3) /(2/3)        1   2   2

((x-1)/2-1)     =9
        +1       +1
(x-1)/2         =10
     x2          x2
x-1             =20
 +1              +1
x               =21

Of course, you don't really have to do that. Just work backwords in your head and it takes like 10 seconds to figure it out.

2x(2+1)=6
2x(6+1)=14
2x(14+1)=30
2x(30+1)=62

PS.Why are we doing your math homework?

It's an IQ test and these math questions are driving me crazy. It sickens me how bad I am at math. I'm not cheating I just wanna know the answers for personal knowledge.

Now try solving 48 / 2(9+3).

One of the most controversial expressions on the internet. The cause of more arguments than airplanes on a conveyor belt.

You're joking right? There's no argument there, there are simple rules to follow.

The truly fucked up arguments come from 0.999 repeating = 1.0 :rolleyes:

Judy had a number of raisins. X

After eating one, X -1

she gave half the remainder to her sister. (x-1) / 2

After eating another raisin ((x-1) / 2 ) - 1

, she gave a third of what was left to her brother. (2 (((x-1) / 2 ) - 1)) / 3

Judy now had only six raisins left. How many raisins did she start with?

(2 (((x-1) / 2 ) - 1)) / 3 = 6
(((x-1) / 2 ) - 1) = 9

(x-1) / 2 = 10
(x-1) = 20
x= 21
