Ok, I have no idea how well this may work (especially since it doesn't involve any new software), but I'm a sucker for new gadgets, so here ya go:
http://www.claw.com.au/index.html

"The benchmark for control within First Person Shooter (FPS) games is now the CLAW™.

If you play FPS games then you need the CLAW™. The CLAW™ is designed to be used, in conjunction with a mouse, to provide the ultimate controller set-up for First Person Shooters (FPS).

With the CLAW™ you will be able to perform manoeuvres that are difficult, if not impossible, with a keyboard. Having nine programmable buttons at your fingertips, to which you can assign up to five keystrokes each, you will be able to circle, strafe or rocket jump with ease. A light press of a button will be all that's required to unleash a world of pain on your enemies.

The CLAW™ makes long hours of gaming a very comfortable experience, supporting your hand in a relaxed position. You will push your keyboard aside and use the CLAW™ to dominate in all of your 3D action FPS games."

The button placement may be a little close and it is 99.95. It does look interesting, but I'd want to see lots of reviews before I plunk down that kind of cash.

well, the article said ~$50 us.
still, unless it's got a mouse type ball underneath, it's not going to be enough for UT.

meaning,
i'm assuming the four thumb buttons are for directional movements. leaving only five other buttons available for weapons, jump, fire, whatever.

if you could move it around like a mouse, then it's basically a microsoft strategic commander type thing. but this one's not usb.

on the plus side, its name -"the claw" - does inspire some fond memories of the latter elvis "sweaty karate" years.

out.
