What I love about Crytek is how they had huge success on PC with Crysis, but decided pirates were ruining their sales, so they went to the consoles instead, made some really shitty COD clones, and now they are screwed. Karma has been served.
The irony is that Crysis outsold it's sequels despite being single platform.
The real reason the company was so close to going under though, is aggressive over-expansion, lack of meaningful direction, and trying too hard to chase whatever the trendy market to be in is rather than focusing on their niche (games aimed towards the hardcore PC market).
Crytek opened / acquired NINE studios in the few years after Crysis - they have several full size development teams. With that kind of manpower, we really should be seeing a game from them every one or two years, but we haven't really seen anything at all.
To top that chasing the console market failed their core franchise, as it caused the title to devolve away from what made it popular in the first place (rich graphics and large open world). Their mobile games are utterly unsuccessful - can anyone here even name one without looking them up? They wasted money chasing free to play by coming in late to the party with the uninspired abomination that is Warface - a generic bulletguns shooter which asks you to effectively rent weapons; you pay cash and can only use them for a limited period of time. Now they're chasing the MOBA space with something equally uninspired, which in itself is already too crowded. That game won't end well either.
