A forum split lets ppl communicate easier to an audiance that is interested and actively looking for the information they want. Searching is half the fun is a lame excuse. The less time I have to search for posts the better. Isn't this board (editing) supposed to encourage productivity? A topic specific forum split means ppl can spend more time posting replys or new topics and actually working on a product. In case no one remembers this was discussed many times in the PlanetUnreal(now BeyondUnreal) forum and the split was encouraged by members here. It was members themselves that brought the idea up. A split is/was a good idea IMO as it ecourages ppl to post in specific forums about certain topics. If the editing forum remains general than besides the heap of various posts related to all aspects of UEd, the OT posts wont help searching either (seriously guys there is an OT board here, use it).

Well my reasons for caring about Coding/Music were because I enjoyed picking things up from those posts that were about something other than mapping.

Searching well you'll find people in coding or music will probably just pop in and ask the same question somebody asked a week ago. It's the way we(Humans) are. Nothing can change that:D

I guess the discussion for the split must have been well before my time. I'd say I've been around for 4-6 months or so:/ So didn't know about that. Might be worth a bump tho:)

OT posts..well in their defense after a while a forum survies because of it's community. Editing is a very different community from OT. THey joke about monkey porn, truffles and stuff. While that is all well and good I don't think NFZ's frequent rants about BSP holes or spy conspiracies would work as well there. Our humor is more editing related. I guess I do see your point in that regard but I'd still think the costs of having to sift thru that outweighs that of splitting the forums. Hey just ignore anything posted by NFZ:D j/k;)

Well conclusion is that Proph came up with a good compromise suggested by several people. So i guess everyone kind of got what they wanted. Anyway I hope that kinda of gives you some idea as to why some of us prefered the old way. Things change I guess in the end change needs to be slow or you get polls like this one;)

split forums suck, really they do

anyone with a genuine interest in the sub-subjects will go elsewhere for specialised knowledge, the only reason I could think of to visit the editig forums here is for a kind of 'all in 1' general experience

Although I am officaily opposed to the split, I feel that the above was a poorly thought out, irrational, and inacurate quote. We have all the specilized knowlege we need; just ask!

I'd like to make it clear that I am no complaining, but I do think my opinion is important here.

While we are introducing ideas, I have a simple one: Could you add a forum jump drop-down list to the "user control panel" (pofile) page? I would appreciate it.

Don't be so hard on yourself, I think you've got the [/quote] tags down pat. Just work on your copy/paste skills a little more :)

Poll didn't have an option for me...

I don't hate the split. I just think that most people will post in a general forum first. For me I skim the topics and checkout anything that looks interesting. I would be less inclined to do that if they were split up.

My anology to that would be:
Have you ever tried to find something and you go nuts trying to find it... but you can't find it?

Well that's a specific forum.

Have you ever come across something you thought lost or that you gave up looking for it because you couldn't find it?

That's a general forum. The more variety the more you find... even when your not looking for it... 'hey that's a neat idea' type finds.. :)

The bottom line is I would prefer one forum but I don't mind the split forums...

i'm happy now :)
tx Proph for re-merging Mapping into General Editing

we need to keep this place n00b-friendly :). ChrisToth's superb FAQ goes a long way towards this.
I for one often scan down the list of threads & investigate ones with zero replies.

so does n00b freindly mean answering the same questions over and over? We all know how n00bs are, if it's not in plain view, forget about searching, time to post.
What I specialize in has to be one of the most obscure aspects of UEd and one of the most frequently asked questions on the Editing board pertains to it. A basic search on mp3 and wav returned 23 topics which at least 3 out of 4 ask the same question. I may sound greedy but I do understand that the music and sound board was not created only for me;).
The forum split was only meant to organise posts (imo). Sure this giant treasure box of posts called editing is nice but would it be just as easy to look through one of the sub-topics every once in a while?
All I'm trying to say is that most of the ppl here are mappers. What is the big deal about the split? If you want to learn something new your chances of doing so are greater because your getting specific information on anything you want, not just random notes and advice.
I'm sitting the rest of this out. I thought it was a great idea bc it gave ppl like me that have an unique talant to get more than 15 minutes of fame, and then fade out behind the masses.
If you need anything you know where to find me.

I think the forum split in its present form is acceptable but I'm affraid that's not the mod's final move.I remember he said he had a plan and that these forums had to be heavily compartimented due to the release of unreaal 2

Cursed, will do. But, the forums look pretty good now. I don't have any plans to do anything else in here. Unless U2 has some new features that specifically need another forum (I don't think it will). Even then, I'll ensure you all know.
