UT on old PCs

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

What are the specs of the PCs you play or have played UT on? I will name the oldest and newest ones I still have.

Main rig (built in 2011 for new games)
AMD Athlon II x4 OC to 3.4 ghz
ASUS AMD Radeon HD 6670 1 GB
8 GB ram
500 gb hard drive + 32 gb ssd for caching
20 inch LCD TV used as monitor @ 1360x768
Windows 8 Pro

Old rig (built in early 2000, presumably for UT or Quake 3)
AMD Athlon 550 mhz
458 mb ram (was 256 megs when I got it from a friend)
ATI Rage 128 Pro 16 MB AGP 4x (bought it for $4 to replace the old broken one)
Windows 98/2000/XP, not sure which OS is better for it. Currently on XP.

I also ran UT on a Pentium II at 450 mhz with a Nvidia Fx 5500 and got good framerates.

For a old PC and hight frames you can take

*This UT full optimised http://unrealtournament.99.free.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7 it was under opengl but you can select d3d (all 2 optimised )
Take:
opengl for a beast processor
d3d for a beast graphic card... d3d9 for a more recent
A LauncherUT99HighPriority come from to. (UT is launched hight priority )

*Or only files settings for http://unrealtournament.99.free.fr/utfiles/UT_Demo/WarConfig.rar
There is 3 level StartConfig MediumConfig WarConfig ...take WarConfig.

UT runs fine even on very recent hardware. Only prerequisite is that you update to newer video renderer (preferably OpenGL) and limit your framerate, then you should be all set.
Some time ago I had opportunity to test UT on eight core Xeon with 16GB of RAM and Radeon 7850 GPU, it went without any hitches.

I started on a 450MHz AMD with a 16MB Banshee GFX card (1999)
Can't remember how much RAM (it was the company server). Would have been 128-256MB RAM.
Multi-boot Win98/NT4 using "System Commander"

Was more than I needed at the time.

Now my main UT99 box, is an Athlon 2500, 1GB RAM, ATI Radion 3600HD - 512MB
Dual boot 98/XP with bits of 95/ME/Win7 grafted into both.
More than enough for a current UT99.

I believe your ATI Rage 128 Pro is a DX6 card, so you probably won't get any performance from the newer renderers, though the D3D8 and 9 renderers will work.

I first played Unreal on this system. It had an ISA slot, that's how old it was:

*Windows 9x, I think we had 98 at the time
*AMD K6-2 333mhz
*64mb PC-100 RAM
*First GPU: S3 Virge DX/GX 4mb (software rendering)
*Second GPU: 3DFX Voodoo2 12mb
*8gb HDD

I first played UT on this system:

*Windows 98 SE
*AMD Athlon 700mhz
*128mb PC-133 or DDR, can't remember if DDR was out then
*Diamond Viper V770 32mb AGP (this was a re-branded TNT2)
*Soundblaster Live! X-Gamer (as in, the very first one!)
*I can't remember the HDD, I think it was a 20-gig

Over the years I've moved up and up and up. Now I play everything on this system:

*Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
*Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3 mainboard
*Core i3-530
*4gb G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600 (2x2, dualchannel)
*XFX HD5850 1gb
*1tb WD Black

If people could only read threads and understand what "old pc" meant before plugging in their stupid warez.
