somewhere; sometime?
That freaking cell phone.
which you could have ignored for the entire game (or even put on silent) with no consequences :p

but yes the 'going out' and 'dating' concept was a stupid idea.
they're not repeating that in GTA V.

anyone who isn't excited for this game is not a person I want to be friends with. like wow this looks incredible.

@Brizz: You stopped playing GTA IV because of the cellphone?:confused::confused::confused: What?

I think you missed out bro... GTA IV and the expansions were not exactly genre-defining or GOTY contenders, and the PC version was one of the worst ports ever, and as Jacks said the dating/going out mechanic was stupid, but they were still really, really fun to play.

About your Saint's Row comment, it's true that if we compare the 2D GTAs with the 3D GTAs and the 2D GTAs with SR3/4, the latter will feel a lot similar. That crazy feel has moved to the easter eggs, billboards and radio in the 3D GTAs. But it's all a matter of taste. I for one have enjoyed both games.

right.
I like both games for very different reasons.

but my experience is the opposite of Brizz's. when I play Saints Row it's like Brizz playing GTA. while I played through and enjoyed both games, it's Saints Row that I have a hard time going back to or playing for very long. I could soak in GTA IV for hours, but SR3 bores me after a few missions.

it's almost too arcade and too unrealistic.
the cars and weapons don't have any feeling or any handling. it's all too simplified.

I just preferred the 2D GTAs. I haven't really played all the way through any 3D GTA. They just take themselves too seriously for my tastes.

I realize you can ignore the cell phone, but you actually have to install mods to make it so the stupid thing doesn't annoy the crap out of you. It also affects the story quite a bit if you just ignore your dopey cousin and a bunch of other people. I don't play GTA to live the moment to moment life of a criminal/ex-criminal. I really hope they took this crap out of GTA 5, even though it probably won't be on PC for months and will have some stupid thing like Rockstar Social Club.

if you haven't actually played "any 3D GTA" then how do you even know ;)

GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas were anything but serious.
the plots were ludicrous. the characters were sociopaths. the missions were tacky and over-the-top. you had chainsaws, miniguns, attack helicopters, gunboats, and missile jets. you had the FBI, the CIA, aliens at Area 51, corrupt cops who run criminal empires, politician who hire you for assassinations, and prostitutes who spied on you for mob bosses. you hijacked commuter trains, dove out of exploding cargo planes in flight, infiltrated government bases, shut down the Hoover Dam, shot up Wall Street, and took over Miami one porn studio and cocaine import/export business at a time... among other things.

granted GTA IV was the most realistic GTA to date.
they removed some of the crazy weapons and vehicles but even then the realism only went so far as the art design (overall look of the game), physics, weapon ballistics, and car handling. that's where it ends. and that's only in comparison to the older GTA titles. on their own, the weapons and car handling in GTA IV are still far from anything resembling 'simulation.'

the game was still one big, giant, beautiful satire of American pop culture and action movies.
to say that you avoided GTA in the 3D era because the games took "themselves too seriously" literally makes no sense to anyone who played them :p

if you don't like them, you don't like them. that's cool.
but saying that they were too serious belies some pretty serious ignorance of the games actual content.

you actually have to install mods to make it so the stupid thing doesn't annoy the crap out of you.
I'm sorry what?
the phone has a 'silent mode.' there's no mods required. turn it on silent and no one calls.

after you do the first introductory dating/friend mission, you never have to do another for the rest of the story.
the cell phone is only used as an occasional way to receive mission information in which it might be part of a cutscene. even when NPC's call with apparently critical info you can simply skip everything they say so that the call ends moments after it began.

It also affects the story quite a bit if you just ignore your dopey cousin and a bunch of other people.
no. it really doesn't.
the only thing you miss out on are extremely negligible mission 'benefits' like being able to call Jacob and have him deliver some weapons.

it's sort of beside the point though, because that crap won't be in GTAV.
watch the gameplay trailer if you haven't. they also added a bunch of the crazy stuff that people were complaining was missing recently. V marks the return of the super-weapons and airplanes that were totally absent from IV.

oh and Hugo is right about online play.
I'm sure some kind of account/login will be required for multiplayer. but what else is new. when I said that GTAIV works offline I'm talking singleplayer of course. they patched RS Social Club out of GTAIV. they admit it was a bad idea to require it as bloatware.

Wait a second, isn't the Social Club on Max Payne 3 and L.A. Noire? Except its not some stupid program that you have to open before you fire the game and keep open in the background and except became a tab that slides from the top inside the game like GFWL/Steam? And aren't you gonna need it to play online?

I've played 3D GTAs, but not for very long. I pretty much always get tired of them within the first 2-3 hours because they don't feel the same as the old GTAs.

dito, the last GTA game I was actually excited about was Vice City and despite being good I miss the 2d GTAs. GTA4 felt too much like a chore and retarded collect 200 collectibles of one kind missions should've been removed several iterations ago. To me the only thing gradually getting greater with each sequel are the soundtracks instead of the stagnant gameplay.

More or less the same. The series peaked at Vice City for me, and while I've played all of them that was the only one I cared for beyond the sandboxing. I got to about the third island in IV when I stopped playing. Physics and gun combat were nice improvements but...I just stopped caring. I think it's generally a Rockstar thing with me as this is typically what happens whenever I play any of their games. Vice City was the exception, and to a lesser extent III.

I'm not too excited for V simply because San Andreas was the one I cared for the least, but that doesn't mean I won't try it. Everyone "tries" GTA.

GTA has gotten better and better with each iteration of the 3D-era.

I simply don't trust anyone who watches the GTA V trailer and isn't somewhat excited by all the advancements and potential gameplay.
like, what's wrong with you? :p

San Andreas had like the most boring missions ever, at least when compared to Vice City.
Vice City was the shit.

Yeah their MP trailer (comes free/separate with all retail keys of the game, OCT 1st). It's good some wacky community-made multiplayer won't have to be around this time.

I'm probably going to get the game if they release it on PC (which may be likely with all the petitions / R*'s hiring positions / ETC)
So much love put into this next-gen-but-not-next-gen game..
