Hey, so I just ordered a laptop for general dicking around, doing 3D modeling, and light gaming (so as not to replace my desktop), and it comes with an NVIDIA 9300 w/ 256 megs of RAM. I'm not too concerned about Source based games (can I run them at max?), but I was wondering if UE3 based games will be able to run? And at what settings?

Thanks! :)

Will they run? Probably.

Will they run well? Probably not.

9300M G
  • 16 Stream Processors.
  • 400 MHz core clock.
  • 800 MHz shader clock.
  • 600 MHz memory clock.
  • Up to 256 MB memory.
  • 64-bit memory interface.
  • 9.6 GB/s memory bandwidth.
  • 3.2 billion texels/s texture fill rate.
9300M GS

  • 16 Stream Processors.
  • 580 MHz core clock.
  • 1450 MHz shader clock.
  • 800 MHz memory clock.
  • Up to 512 MB memory.
  • 64-bit memory interface.
  • 6.4 GB/s memory bandwidth.
  • 4.6 billion texels/s texture fill rate.
This performance is roughly equal to a desktop GeForce 6 card - it has the shader amounts of the higher-end 6800s, but the bandwidth and fillrate are more around the 6600 levels. A GeForce 6800 or so is about the minimum card UT3 would run on. If the game does run, it will likely be at minimal settings and low resolution.

Hmm, I have an 8600M GT, which was mid-range for the 8000 series, and Source games run very well maxed out w/ no AA at 1440x900 to 1680x1050 at an average of 45 fps.

UT3, my only UE3 game, does not do nearly as well. I run it with most settings on high (texture 4, world 4 w/ tweaks) at 1440x900 and it chugs on more detailed maps down in the lower 20s. Playing on the HOLP maps gives me about 40-45 fps though, so it's all about the map. If I'm plan to play on retail maps, I have to turn down the resolution to 1280x800.

The 9300M will probably do decent with Source games, and somewhat poorly with UE3. I'd expect around 30+ fps in source games at 1280x800 or so, but UE3 running well isn't very likely.
