"Your CD key appears to be invalid.."

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

"You will need to reinstall the game and enter your CD key to fix this problem."

This message just appeared out of the blue; everytime I try to run UT2k4, I get this message. It was working not more than 10 minutes ago. The game recently crashed, (I went to play Instant Action, and I selected Assault, and my computer froze up, after I rebooted it didn't work). I looked in the Registry and the CD key listed there is correct. Do I really have to reinstall? If so, do I have to back-up all of my downloaded stuff (Maps, Mods, Skins, etc.)? Or will it remain there?

Yeah - Once my copy bugged with that error too... and I was all like "someone stole my key!"
But a re-instal was all I could do to rectify this problem.
The stuff should stay there... once your un-instal it should leave all the extra stuff you got... "should" I would back up if ya wanna be on the safe side.

Mr. T Says, "Que?"
Start>Run>Regedit> search for your UT2004 CD-Key which is located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, Unreal Technology, Installed Apps, UT2004, CDKey. Change that value to your cd key and if you get the same message change it to all lower case. This is assuming you are using Windows of course.

Over there
I've had this problem before when I hosed UT2004.ini. Delete UT2004.ini (keep a backup), and then see if it will run.

Ya, my UT2004.ini was corrupt. I deleted it and everything is fine now.

I tried all the stuff above and couldn't get any of it to work. This is after transitioning to windows 10.

Sorry for necrobump!

[2016-02-10 09:40:31] <Alhanalem> Anyone know if I can fix the UT2004 "CD key appears to be invalid" issue without reinstalling
[2016-02-10 09:40:50] <Alhanalem> I found an old thread on the forums but I couldn't solve the problem
[2016-02-10 09:40:56] <Alhanalem> seems like it broke when I moved to windows 10
[2016-02-10 09:41:22] <@Wormbo> try patching to 3369 again and use UT2KX RegCheck to check the CD key
[2016-02-10 09:41:42] <@Wormbo> Win10 seems to break a lot in that regard
[2016-02-10 09:41:54] <@Wormbo> personally I don'T recommend using it at all

[2016-02-10 09:42:27] <Alhanalem> eh. getting old stuff to work right is the biggest issue i have
[2016-02-10 09:48:36] <@Wormbo> oh, and remember to run UT2004 and the RegCheck as admin
[2016-02-10 09:50:07] <Alhanalem> Fixed it thanks :D
[2016-02-10 09:53:18] <Alhanalem> is it possible to get 2k4 into a 16:9 resolution?
[2016-02-10 09:56:55] <@Wormbo> edit ini or do something like "setres 1920x1080" at the console
[2016-02-10 09:57:43] <Alhanalem> hm
[2016-02-10 09:57:51] <Alhanalem> game crashes if I try to go full screen

That crash is apparently an incompatibility between the ways Windows 10 and UT2004 expect DirectX to work, but there are ways around it.
