Epic Games Readies for Action at Game Developers Conference 2012

On the heels of a legendary D.I.C.E. Summit celebrating 20 years of the studio’s success, Epic prepares to usher in the next wave of world-class games at GDC 2012

CARY, N.C. (February 27, 2012) – Epic Games, Inc. announces its participation in the Game Developers Conference (GDC) to be held March 5-9, 2012 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Epic will host press sessions and meet with developers and partners of its award-winning Unreal Engine technology in Business Suite 800, West Hall, at GDC 2012. In addition, Epic Games Design Director Cliff Bleszinski is set to host the Game Developer Choice Awards, and a dozen senior members of Epic’s staff are scheduled to speak at the conference.

Leading the Way in Next-Gen

Epic will conduct business and technical meetings for Unreal Engine 3, which offers the best toolset available for AAA game development, from mobile platforms and web-based gaming to consoles, high-end PC and beyond. The Unreal Engine holds eight consecutive Game Developer magazine Front Line Awards, with Unreal Engine 3 receiving the most recent accolade for best engine last month.

Epic will also unveil a preview of its next-generation game technology, Unreal Engine 4, to select licensees, partners and prospective customers during the exhibition. Space is very limited, and appointments and non-disclosure agreements are required to see the Unreal Engine 4 presentation.

Those wishing to meet with Epic should email licensing@epicgames.com. Please specify three possible meeting times, the number of people planning to attend and whether those individuals would like to see a technology demonstration, chat with Epic business representatives, speak with Epic technical representatives or discuss other matters.

Appointments are not required but priority will be given to those with confirmed arrangements. In addition, Epic will host free advanced training sessions for its game engine licensees. Representatives from Epic Games Korea, Epic Games Japan and Yingpei Games (formerly Epic Games China) will be on hand to speak with licensees and prospective customers from those regions.

Hours for Epic’s expo suite are as follows: Wednesday, March 7, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., Thursday, March 8, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Friday, March 9, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Announcing the Latest News

Epic will host media briefings on Wednesday, March 7, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m., and Thursday, March 8, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. in its private expo suite. Thursday’s session will repeat content from Wednesday. I remember how blown away I was at the UE3 tech demo.

Let's see if the same thing happens again.

Yeah, the UE3 demo was really something, a massive achievement. If UE4 can blow our socks off just like UE3 did, it will really be something special. Tim Sweeney gogo!

Too bad we won't get to see anything though.

Well last year at GDC Epic showcased the DX 11 Samaritan demo behind closed doors and then a few weeks later released the same demo for public viewing. I am sure they will do the same thing this time as well.

I don't feel it will look much better in many aspects than everything current-gen, so it's better for me not to get excited.

Epic will be pushing the envelope once again and showing everybody how it's done.
Make no mistake, it's going to be jaw-dropping.

Sweeney stated that the features in the Unreal Engine 4 would require 10 times more processing capabilities of the hardware than the current console generation could provide. And even the next console generation will only be 6 times faster than the current one, so who knows if Unreal Engine 4 will actually be in use for the next console generation already. Good thing we are PC players.

I dunno. Crytek might be developing something right now that might ruin Epic's day.

Difference is, the UE3 tech demo was in 2004, when was Crysis? 2006?

And even then, CryTek has sold out to consoles. They don't care about pushing the envelope anymore.

edit: lol

And Epic hasn't sold out eh? Quit being a fanboy and wait till we actually see what UE4 has to offer. For all we know UE4 might just be a console optimized version of the UE3 Samaritan tech demo.

As for Crytek Arnox, I doubt they are working on a new engine if this article is to be believed http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/5040/article/cryengine-developers-look-at-next-gen-platforms

The engine, which was most recently used to power Crysis 2, is said to be futureproof and powerful enough that it can fully utilize the power of the next-gen consoles

The samaritan demo was amazing, an achievement in my opinion. I like Epic though, that's true.
It really would be a shame if UE4 was just a better UE3, rather than a whole new level like UE3 was.
