I understand what you mean, but not how this makes Epic/Midway marketing guys to stick with the 200x naming convention. I'm a n00b in marketing, but from my point of view I see the following:

Notice, in my post, I didn't mention which way I thought was better. I was simply stating the fact that the naming is important. Whatever name that's included on the box had better be right, or it's going to kill sales.

The name of the game is NOT aimed to attract us (those already aware of the UT universe), but those who are NOT familiar with the game. The name is important to strike their interest in the game. If Epic feels that the 200X convention is best for drawing NEW players, then so be it. If not, then they're making a mistake.

Don't be so hasty here. I could care less, as I stated, what the game is called. Just so long as the game is good. Selerox on the other hand, as like much of the other members of this forum, are nearly tossed in to a fit of rage at the idea that the new UT is going to be called UT2007. Why is this? Because it has a horrible reminder of the 200X games before it. The 200X games were like acid to the face of there beloved UT99. I could care less, but selerox and others like him are repulsed by the idea.

Im not defending anything, except the fact that im not defening anything. Those who are up in arms about the name are the ones defending, there defending there old school roots because of the newschool games that they were unsatisfied with.

OOH NOOSE, I LOOOOOOTHED 2K3 AND OOOOOH MAN WAS 2K4 TOTALY NOT ITS OWN GAME SO IT DOSN'T EVEN COUNT, AND NOW TO TOP IT ALL OFF EIPIC IS SOOOOO TOOTALY NAMING THE NEW UT UNREAL TOURNEMENT 2007, WHICH ONLY REMINDS ME OF HOW MUCH I LOOOOOOOTH 2K3 AND HOW MUCH I DISLIKED 2K4 FOR IT NOT BEING A FULL AND COMPLETE GAME! OH LORD WHY MUST THEY DO THIS TO ME, IM SO TOTALY NOT GOING TO LIKE THIS GAME AT ALL WHEN IT COMES OUT BECAUSE I TOTALY DONT LIKE THE GAMES BEFORE IT!

seriously cry me a river, build a bridge and get over it.

I play UT2004 every single day of the week. Ditto UT2003. I also played UT since the original demo. So am I some fanatic of the original UT? Not really. I loved the original UT, but it's time had passed, so I adapted and moved on. However, I think the fact that fact that the new UT is including some of the gameplay elements from the original UT, as well as tweaked UT200X is a good thing overall.

The reason I don't like the idea of the name UT2007 for the new game isn't because it reminds me of the UT200X serires, but because it reminds the non-UT players of it. For all it's positives (and it has many of them), the UT200x games had a few fairly major flaws that put off a lot of possible players (UT2003 more than UT2004 admittedly). UT2003 really wasn't a great game in terms of features and playability (by that meaning reliability and bugs), it was also way ahead of the tech curve. It was a big disapointment to many inside and outside the UT community, and it's overall public image took a beating.

Epic state they want a fresh start with the new UT, where they can erase the mistakes that Epic have openly admitted they made on UT200X. They also admitted that the sports style thing really didn't go down well with anyone. Why not wipe the slate clean and head for a seperate naming system, as most people expected -and a significant number wanted- by which I mean UT2/3/4 (depending on your definitions on wether you count UT2003 or the UT200X series at all, some people don't). The fact that they chose the UT2007 name, ties the negative public image to the game that it inherited from UT2003. It's not exactly indictative of starting over is it? A return to simple numbered sequels would give a far better idea of the age of the series as well. UT2007 gives no idea of how long the series has been around, and so doesn't make it sound as "established" as maybe it should. A name such as UT4 makes the game appear (rightly) to be a long-standing series with a reputation. UT2007 simply doesn't, especially as many new players may not know about the UT series, and so simply won't know how long the game's been around. A game name that gives the impression of being an "insitiution" gives a far better image than a relativly "faceless" dated game.

It's one of the reaons the xbox360 got it's name. It would have been a straight fight between PS3 and Xbox2, but Microsoft marketing believed that the added "gravitas" for want of a batter word, of the PlayStation's longer series could impact negativly on sales. Subconciously, people see a 3rd generation console being better than a 2nd gen one (3>2). So Microsoft went the route of naming the new xbox the xbox360, thus including the "3" part to match the PS3, and in effect sidestepping the PS3's appeal of being the most established console series. That is smart marketing. Epic/Midway haven't grapsed the concept. Let's hope the future publicity budget for the next UT is bigger (and better used) than the one for UT200X.

Damn, I'm in the wrong career here...

Well im deffinitly glad that you made an intelligent post. Pluss I can see where your coming from now. If only people on forums and the internet as a whole were as well written as that.

But can you agree that all this fuss over a game name is allmost redicules? I meen I can understand if theres some kind of game element that set off this kind of reaction. But a name? Too me its like be offerd a Ferrari Enzo and complaining that its the color blue.

You forget though that to name it UT3 or UT4 would be just as confusing, they would register to some as very simlar to UT2003 or UT2004. They end in 3 and 4, so, as you say the mind registers them. If UT3/4 came out it'd be confused.
I'm fairly certain that's their thoughts as far as marketing goes.

Either way, i remember at the beginning, the only reason people were so upset about the UT200X name was that ti suggested that UT would be released ona yearly basis and people feared for the standard of future games. This fear was clearly unfounded now as no UT2k5 or 6 will ever be released.
So i'd say i'mn to that bothered about the name.

I do believe UT3/4 would confuse people and UT5 more so... they started the 200X and now they will have to finish it i believe. I could be wrong but it makes sense to me kinda.

If you're not going to do them every year, then why on earth do dated naming? Simply do it sequentially. As for the UT3/UT2003 confusion, I don't think that would be a problem. Gamers are't that stupid :)

]SideWinder[ - I was a little too angry earlier to be quite that coherant. The reason I got (and still am) worked up about it is because it could be a cause of negative public image to do with the game. What I care about is that the next UT is popular and brings in a whole generation of new players. In that respect, my aims and Epic/Midway's are exactly the game. Epic/Midway gets more revenue from the game, we get an expanded community, the new players get a great new game. Evereyone wins. Every little helps, and the name of the game (if you'll excuse the pun) is much more important than you might think. If Epic/Midway make a mistake with the name and due to that relays a less than optimum public image of the game (the overall fiasco relating to UT2003 is still a sticking point), then it's bad for all of us. It's nice to know ssomeone thinks my posts are (sometimes) intelligent though, at least when I'm not in "Angel of Vengeance" mode :)

hm, well, on the marketing point of view, do you think that enough people out there (i.e. not on these forums) know about unreal engine 3 as well as they know about the next UT? if the engine is well known , then naming the game to reflect the engine changes would be beneficial, but maybe not alot of people know about game engines and stuff....

also, i have gotten into the habit of calling the original UT , 'ut99' , and the ue2.5-based games 'ut2k3' and 'ut2k4' , so at least the naming convention is easy on me... maybe when we look back, we can think that games seperated by 1 year = same engine , games seperated by a couple of years = different engine... maybe that would end up making sense

I gotta agree, this is one p00p decision.

If you passed over Unreal Tournament 2003 and didn't give Unreal Tournament 2004 a second glance, odds are you won't even notice that Unreal Tournament 2007 is a new and different product... you'll just think, "what's that Unreal Tourna- whatsis NumberNumberNumberNumber still doing on the shelf? Jeez, it hasn't come down a bit in price, either..."

That year thing just doesn't carry a bit of impact with it. Needs to have more Unreal Tournament This Game Is Going To Kick Your Ass And Make You Like It- ness to it. Jeez, if I can figure it out it can't be hard...

i hope so its such a stupid name no offense to people who like it
I think sticking with the year/sequel name theme is a good idea. It's a pisser it's 2k7 though, I was hoping for something like "Unreal Tournament June 2005," or something like that. Yeah, I never really got the "Envy" thing, I like 2k7 better. Or maybe give it an alternate name, like Unreal II: The Awakening. I dunno what the sub-name would be, but it'd just be a good idea.

We're not trying to make a prettier UT2K4. We're really trying to make a very new game.
I vote we completely forget about the Unreal Tournament trademark and just call it... Envy!

*EDIT*: Just in-case someone actually takes that seriously (which I wouldn't be surprised) that was sarcasm.

I don't mind the 2007. If they only made one UT per engine, I would say go with the engine number but since they're likely going to make another UT on UE3, calling it UT3 would probably be a bad idea.

I can't be bothered to read the long posts, so maybe I repeat something

imo UT07 isn't bad, even though I would have prefered a name like UT:envy, because it would seperate the games more(UT07 will break with some traditions and will be different, that's why I think it's shouldn't stand in a line with UT03/04)

the reason why the game woun't be called UT3(or UT4, because it's the forth UT release) is because people could confuse it with UT03/04

Didn't like the 2k3 moniker - Was disapointed to see them keep it up with 2k4 (even though the game was a bit better).. but 2k7? Apart from the stupid gap between "versions", it will, as has been stated put a lot of the people off who didn't bother with the 2k* UTS.

And more than that, this is a massive chance for epic to go for glory, they could have done it with a better title that would signify the apparently monumental changes (in both technology and gameplay).

Still.. it IS the game that matters at the end of the day - but what a missed oppurtunity to wipe the slate clean!

Lets just forget the (relatively) failures of UT2003 and UT2004, and name the new UT as it should be named: UT2. Or maybe Unreal Tournament: <something more here>, like Unreal Tournament: Envy.

UT2007 is so utterly boring, and makes you think of hockey games (although I like watching hockey).

Hopefully Envy will be a step back towards UT in terms of gameplay (atleast thats what Epic hints at), which would also make UT2 the better choise.

UT3 is stupid though and UT4 even more stupid :D

The next UT is going to be the fourth UT made, therefore it would be logical to call it UT4, i actually dont mind and kind of like the whole UT07 name.

WTF People.

Hey all, my 1st post... YAY..

Anyway... Who really gives a rats about the title of the bloody thing. I have been a big fan of the whole UT series and have recently got back into ut:GOTY. Personally, as long as the gameplay is good, i dont care if they call it hairy left testicle. I expect this to be the best of lot by a long way. Keeping loyal to the UT99 players, and giving us some new action.

Yeah thats my 5c
