BillyBadAss : I don't believe times have changed so much... America still represent hope for a lot of people, and they flee their contry because there are problems there, problems of unemployement and economic recession. You'll never convince me that the economic situation is better in mexico (or in south america altogether) than in usa.
I don't know exactly to when you refere but, at that time america was certainly not as rich as it is nowadays. So the argument you can't afford to accept anyone is quite irrelevant.
But if you refer to the begining of the century, illegal immigrants were numerous at that time, coming from new-york.
Or later in the century the boatpeople fleeing problems in asia and arriving by the pacific ocean.
Nowadays they come from mexico, but honestly, I don't see a difference. They still come for the same reason : to earn a better living.....

Times have changed enough that its isn't possible for America to afford to pay for everyone on the planet to live here. Or anywhere else for that matter.

I find it funny that everyone in the worls knows their country is in hugish amounts of debt but believes that America has endless funds to spend on supporting them. It just isn't true. If you want to come to America come the legal way or stay out. I don't want to have to accomodate them, this is MY country. In my country we speak English. In my country you have to be a citizen to take advantage of the benefits of living here. I think we should be willing to help people accept that, but we shouldn't just be accomodating everyone that comes, making spanish an "official" language, etc.

When our forefathers founded the country, they agreed that the language would be English...some of them were French, British, German, etc. The only excuse these people have for not learning English is that they are too lazy.

It's because we live in different times.(post 9/11/01) We just can't let anyone into our country and let them do as they please. They either have to have a green card or visa.(Just like in your country.) Many other Mexicans register and get one everyday, not everyone gets one, but we can't help that. If the rest of the world is concerned about Mexico's economy, an education, then why don't they offer a free education? All it is, is your hard earned tax money right? And as long as they raise taxes to cover the cost of educating them, everything should work out great.

Agreed with EVC. They actually took a vote on it way back when and the English beat out German by one vote, I believe. My take is that if they come to our country illegaly, they'd better at least learn the language. I don't want to help with the (excuse the term) "Mexicanization" of California. This is the reason that I took German in HS and not Spanish; while it may not be as useful in CA, at least I'm doing a very tiny part of keeping California part of the US.

Also, a funny little anecdote: the other day in church we were talking about families, and my friend spoke up and said that he wanted to have 20 kids; the teacher asked how he would pay for their needs and for college. I spoke up quickly and said "have the kids in Mexico, let them hop the border, and then you can get their college for free." Hilarious.

Hahahaha. How do you propose to make them pay up? Maybe you should just let one of their secret police come to America and behead the immigrant on the spot, it would save everyone time and money.

D'uh, they have no right to hold them back. In general anyone is free to leave any nation. If you don't want them to enter yours, that is your own problem entirely. :p

So boot em back to there last legally occupied country it's not hard. I imagine that the governments won't pay, that was more of a joke. But seriously illegal immigrants should not be tolerated at all they are right up there with 70% of the people on welfare. All of them are useless tax sucking problems. I am personally speaking about Canada's welfare situation. Right up there with native reserves, another place that breeds hopelessness. Oh god I could go on but I am already busting a nerve

Well, I know Spanish....and Russian. What's your excuse for not learning Russian? Why don't we just make Japanese the "official language" if that's how people feel.

Afaik, the US does NOT have an official language.

Exactly. If the people who lived in the USA actually bothered to learn a little about the country they lived in, perhaps they would look less ignorant.

There is no official national language in the USA.

37 million US citizens speak a language other than english at home. (USDoH)

Why should we have to learn their language in OUR country. English is the native language here, not spanish. They want to live here? Then they should learn our language, plain and simple.

Spare us the ultra-nationalist crap. Its no more your country than it is someone who speaks Spanish, Italian, Greek or Portugese. You think you are more american because you are white and speak english?

Might not be "official" but its the most spoken and the people who created this country spoke it, surely not spanish.

The people who created your country also created universal freedom of speech and expression, the freedom to communicate whatever one wants, including the right to do so in whatever language one wants. Theres nothing more irritating than people suggesting libertarian idealists like those who created the US constitution and bill of rights are somehow nationalistic fascists.

Well, I know Spanish

If you speak spanish, why the hell do you have a problem with native spanish speakers?

I kinda agree with

If you can't speak one of the two main languages (french and english) here in Canada, you aren't going to be of much help to the econmy. Most likley you'll end up with a very low paying job, that does little more than keep you off welfare (if your not already on it). I am not saying only allow doctors and tradesmen in but you should at least be able to speak (not read or write) one of the two languages and show that you can contribute to the econmy. I wouldn't immigrate into the USA if I didn't know one of their two languages and have an employable skill.

Hi. Did you forget something called the melting pot? Isn't that your countries immigration model?
Melting Pot:n 1: an environment in which many ideas and races are socially assimilated
I live up here in Canada we are a "cultural mosaic" which has it's own problems.
I say if people want to keep their culture or traditions up when they move to another country , great! Just don't ask the government for money to do it.

Freedom of expression, yes. But EVERYONE should be able to understand each other wihtout the need of a translator. Wanna speak your own language, go right ahead, talk to your family and anyone that can understand it. I went to the hospital here a while ago and the majority of the people there were spanish, and it seems most barely know any english. My grandpa and his friend have this shirt:

Welcome to America, now speak english!!!!

I feel everyone in the US should have to know/speak english fluently. Everyone should be able to understand each other. The majority and them some of the US speak english, so it really should be the official language. They come here and speak their language, expecting us to know what they mean, now they came HERE, so they should have to learn OUR language, not we have to learn theirs because they cant/are too lazy to learn ours.

While learning English cannot and should not be mandated as a requisite for American occupation, I think it would awful nice if the immigrants could at least fill out a job application or welfare form in the language the ****ing thing is printed in.
