Here's something for all you players soooo concerned about your own perception of your skills.
Given: flak is a spamming weapon that can be hard to defend against.
So, what's a better indication of YOUR skills? To go whine about how unfair that particular weapon is, to the point of degrading people that use it (i.e. "flak=no skills")
OR, to seek out the "skill-less" users of this "newbie" weapon and FRAG THEM MERCILESSLY? Hmm... methinks the latter.

Prophetus][PuF]- I'd like to see you even TRY to dodge flak particles when you don't even SEE them until they've already torn through your player's body, and left a chunked corpse on the ground. (56k)
If i had cable+ I think I might hate the flak just a little less... :)

well, personally, i flak alot - alot of times, because it's the only weapon you can quickly get to on some maps. Other times, it's just to try and get back at all the shock ho's on the roost!

however, i find the primary fire to be almost useless, unless your opponent runs inside a tube or something.

i would say at least 80% of my flak kills are from the secondary lob, which i wouldn't consider a skill-less tactic.

as for me, i think that the directional keys are lame.
they take absolutely no skill to press down, and all some newbie has to do to avoid my fruitless attacks is press one of them and they are magically moved away from me. i think people shouldn't be so lame and that they should just stand still and let me kill them.

out.

I got your PM right HERE!
Boy...people are testy today...

I think that last point TDS made is the important one. If you have a bunch of people running around in tight hallways with flak cannons it comes down to a twitch-fest and who has the best connection. I have cable and low pings but it doesn't take much packet loss to make for a very frustrating flak cannon encounter.

Not all the maps are set up in a way that makes it easy to dislodge a flak "whore".

Anyway - it's like all the weapons - I love fragging people with it and hate it when someone owns me with it. That's life - try another tactic - or take a break from UT and go download some monkey porn.

I think the flak does require skill. The firing rate is slower than most other weapons so if you miss with it you could be in trouble. Plus you can also injure yourself.

The only thing I don't like so much about the flak or the ripper primary is that you can shoot around corners and kill people that you could not see or even knew were there. Since the flak and blades follow the path of the corridor, it's almost like having a homing weapon. Actually the ripper is more of a culprit here than the flak. Perhaps if they limited the amount of ricocheting a blade did I'd like it better. I remeber this console game called Vigilante 8 (car combat like Twisted Metal) and it's biggest problem to me was that it contained to many homing weapons. I could literally kill the computer without ever seeing it.

The idea of any game is to give a balanced feel for everyone. Taking out what I consider to be hpb friendly weapons would surely only harm the game in the long run.

Away from the ping issue, games need to be easy to pick up and play, but hard to master. Things like Flak, multi-rockets, spamming blades and goo etc. all help newbies to get some kills. If you had high skill wepaons only, a lot of people would give up after a few weeks of getting hammered on-line.

I think the weapons are damn good. Easy to use, but hard to master. All have strengths to use and weaknesses to exploit.

I don't get it, people seems to hate every gun they getting shot with.
I never use flak myself, i allways kill myself with it more as others, and when i try to hit someone with it, i allways miss with it.
But considering it llame, no not really.
I use myself the minigun alot, and also been called a newbie, llamer, etc because its my Fav. weapon. Also i like to play DM with a sniper alot, and GOO.
But all weapons need a certain skill to use, and they all have their dissatvantages. And when someone shoots at you with a weapon, and you don't know how to escape it, its you lack of skill.

No matter ping
The ping part imho also a llame excuse of most people, as most of the people i know here can see, i had all kind of pings, low, med, high, extreme HIGH, and on all servers i can play the same. The part that most people are forgetting is the higher the pings is, the larger the lead is.
How often i see an person 0wning people with much lower pings as he does. Only what really matters is an steady pings, pingspikes and Bouncing signals, and PL, those are the real game spoilers, not the 200ms difference between players, when its steady ping.

There's two types of flakkers...

There are those that simply run around holding the button down on primary fire and kill eveyone and themselves. And there are those that use primary in controled bursts and more often use the secondary fire like a grenade launcher. Im one of the second users since I don't like to suicide that much. I do the same thing with the ripper(which I guess also requires no skill). I rarely spam with either of these weapons as it tends to get you killed. It does seem like lately ALOT of people are coming out saying this weapon sucks and this weapon requires no skill. It's really annoying. Just because someone doesn't know how to counter a weapon, or can deal with it(maybe because of lag), doesn't mean the weapons is lame or requires no skill. The other day someone called me a newbie loser cause I was owning them with the ASMD. It's my favorite weapon and I tend to use it alot. He said I sucked cause it was the only weapon I could use. So proceeded to own him with every other weapon on the stage, and I believe that Deck-16 has all the weapons on it. Needless to say he still whined about how skilless I was. Every weapon I used was lame except the sniper. Of course then I had to be cheating cause I kept getting head shots. My point is that "skill" is how you outthink your enemy and how you use the weapons and other tools to help you. I think someone else said that if you think these people have no skill, then you should be able to defeat them easily. Obviously you can't so you come here to whine about it. That shows like of skill IMHO. If I'm fighting some newbie that is simply spamming, 9 times outta 10 he's dead. It's not that difficult. Oh well, enough ranting from me.

LOL!You're right, that's it!! It takes "skillz" to pull of a strafing shock combo, but "skills" to do a twisting double handspring on the floor excercise. :)

This is SOOO true! That's why I almost never play Face anymore. :)

I love the Flak, and it's my favorite weapon. But it's not all-powerful. It's got it's limitations, and it's strengths. So do all weapons in UT.

The ability to flick a mouse at the right instant does not even compare. Maybe we give ourselves too much credit by using that word. But I digress ...

All I know is, I could probably whip up on any of those 13 year old girls in UT. :D

Not that they couldn't literally whip up on me in person though. Some of them are built like little tanks. :)

No, I didn't say you were a spawn sniper. I said "Unlike the llama snipers on face that like to spawn snipe..." Face is notorious for that.

I am tired of people coming here and complaining that it takes no skill to use X weapon, tired of hearing that "people camp in CTF", etc.

People are going to play the game the way they want to play. Someone wants to use the flak all night long? Good for them. Someone wants to snipe all night long, wh00pie!

I've heard people use the word "skill" an awful lot the past few weeks. Define "skill" for me please.

The only time I see people complain about a tactic or weapon is when they don't know how to deal with it or figure out a way around that tactic or weapon. Instead of playing and getting better, it's easier to complain.

I'm curious why everyone feels that they are somehow superior with this game that they can be bold enough to proclaim that "using the X requires no skill". And why should we take your word for it?

See where I am going here?

I'm not trying to be an ass, but c'mon...

Why is it so hard for people to just accept that it's acceptable to use any weapon at any time ... what else are they there for, decoration?

Ultron, I bet those four foot tall 13-year olds could whip my bootie in no time. They'd come cartwheeling down towards me, flip up eight feet in the air and in a whirling dervish of flailing arms and legs they would kick and punch me in the head, gut, and crotch and leave me lying there like a quivering pile of gelatin.

You can use all weapons at all time......yes, even the sniper rifle........

The main reason I don't play face anymore........ snipers.....

And to come back to flak cannon=No skill........I'm a flakwhore........but that doesn't mean I can't use any other weapon.......
Flak is great.....all my shockho friends hate it when I come flakking at them.......
