In the last two weeks at work I took to listening to random game OSTs on youtube to drown out background noise in our open-plan office when I needed to concentrate. My own music collection is too lyrics-heavy for that. And this thread gives me new pointers.

well hey, why not both? Mafia II and Sleeping Dogs did amazing things with licensed music.
people have already mentioned some of my favorite originals like Deus Ex, Mirrors Edge, and Ass Creed. and I guess it would be a little crass to mention something like Super Mario World in the ranks of best soundtrack... ?

ok maybe not the original 8bits, but like the music itself? you guys remember how much the score used to be a part of the game as compared to background noise like much of it is now. I really enjoy a lot of the interpretations people do with classics, because a lot of the music composed for simple Nintendo games back in the day was pretty good actually.

how awesome is that.
some of those songs never get old. when it comes to newer games soundtracks I'm sort of 50/50. a lot of games are so good looking, and feel so good, and sound so good as the processing power and graphics skyrocket that I often disable music when they give the option. sometimes a soundtrack will totally kill the sense of immersion for me and remind me of the "game" aspect of the game

but sometimes it really works very well. modern example. how about AC Black Flag? the sea shanties might be one of the best features of this whole title. it works especially well if you imagine the sound of crashing waves and the ocean spray behind you, men working and shouting, the pull of ropes and levers (as there is in the game).

- Port of Adia, and also an orchestral arrangement of the T2SOE songs played by a Youth Symphony.
- Primagen's Lightship (I especially like the portion around 4:00 minutes)

Yeah, you see, that's the problem with these threads. Everyone's usually too busy showing off the music they think everyone should listen to and don't actually take the time to listen to the music other people post. (I am equally to blame for this.) Add to that the fact that music is incredibly subjective and you get a thread where everyone is talking and no one is listening.
