The GTF (of T.com fame) has closed ...

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

... after I can't remember how many years, but yeah, it's gone now.

I'm sure not all of you will remember but back when the GTF was part of T.com it was a fairly decent community with thousands of active members. I guess it was similar to BU and Atari Community, back in the UT and UT2004 days. Over the years it moved multiple times (the T.com domain was bought out from under the owner, or some kind of craziness. I can't remember) and became less active and it devolved into something less good as many communities do. It was a cesspool in many respects. It had it's share of asshats, just like BU and most other forums. But on the whole there were still some good people, even now. Oh well, right?

I just posted there a couple days ago. To my knowledge there was no warning or anything, they just pulled the plug. I was working on studio stuff all day today so I have no idea when exactly it happened.

User run game communities are hard to keep going these days, due to how closed down everything has become.

I think GU being a server host kept it afloat much longer then it would have lasted otherwise. Though honestly it didn't go down the tube until after the decision was made to stop hosting UT/UT2k4/UT3 servers and focus solely on source based game servers.

We are on the same path. This is our forum in the future if things don't change.

I would agree except that BU as a whole is solid. It is this particular portion of the forum that appears to be going in that direction which luckily doesn't represent the rest of the BU site and thus BU will survive.

If you leave political and religious topics out of this off topic section it is just fine around here. But when you start a sentence with a conjunction and make it a run-on sentence and remind everyone that modern day democrats pursue the fastest path to socialism and that Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary and died for all of our sins so that we may be forgiven and excepted into the Kingdom of Heaven people just freak out! LOL ;)

I wonder who will write the final goodbye note for BU when it does crash and burn. I do suspect it will be one of the next 10 respondants after this reply. Go!

GU tried something like this. Somebody bought the business end of it and attempted to restart on a different host without migrating the old database. Nobody wanted to re-register and start fresh and so it flopped.

As far as we can tell, the old admin will be providing the database from the existing forum.

The issue I have its that nobody seems to care our take pride in the quality of the forum anymore. I can run a nasty argument, but I was always respectful to individuals. Past little while though I've acted like a complete jerk. All I did was throw back the treatment I always hated being in the receiving end of. You all just laughed, and enjoyed the entertainment. I was hoping people would realize what happens when the nice posters give in, but it turns out nobody really cares. I wanted somebody to stand up. Someone to say "get out! This place isn't like that". I guess the truth is this place IS like that.

Not that it's a lost cause or I think the forum is completely ruined. Otherwise I wouldn't post at all. I still have hope it can turn around. But the trend seems pretty clear to me.

I wouldn't say nobody, though as a mere fellow user I don't count for a whole lot, I usually get called something along the lines of hippy or just get flamed when I point out dickish behavior. This sort of thing is why I was a lurker for 4 or 5 years before making an account, but it finally came to the point that my need for intelligent discourse was outweighed by my disgust at how people with a difference of an opinion would all to often be ridiculed right off the forums. That and I am cheap and MENSA dues are not in my opinion. This place is far from there true, but I like that, that organization is so uptight about being cerebral I could feel my pants creeping up to my armpits.

I did notice that in the second to last paragraph but when I originally read it I mistakenly took the comment on security to imply he wouldn't be handing over the user tables along with the rest of the database.

It's true that nobody takes pride in the quality of the the forum, but that doesn't mean ruination. It's a transformation; we went from a barely curated community to anarchy. You might dislike the way certain people behave in that context. That's okay.
