If you missed last night's game, you missed one of the most physical games of the playoffs. Both Dallas and New Jersey lost players (Sydor for Dallas and Sykora for New Jersey), and, except for one penalty by Jason Arnott in the first of two overtimes, went to the penalty box for the same length of time. In the end, however, it was Arnott who finished the playoffs.
About six minutes into the second overtime, Patrik Elias and Jason Arnott led an odd-man rush that was NOT in their favor. Elias was moving up the far side boards, Arnott was fading from the slot to the boards near side. Two Star defensemen were hovering around Elias, one trailing just a bit beside him, the other close to the goal. Elias managed to slip a pass right by the outstretched stick of the man near the goal to Arnott, who the flipped a shot right by Belfour on the near side. End game, end series, end playoffs. The New Jersey Devils beat the Dallas Stars 2-1 in the game, and 4-2 in the series. The Conn Smythe trophy for playoffs MVP went to Devils captain Scott Stevens. Stevens became only the sixth defenseman to become the playoffs MVP.
