They are .DOCX files, but I'll convert them soon.

Docx has no real advantages unless you are including vector graphics, other than making people get a newer MS Office.
Use RTF if you can, as it is the most supported format.

Open Office and all variants such as Libre Office can open DocX, as it is just a clone of their own scalable format.
They will also export PDF files, if that is also useful to you.
