A press release explains that Geomerics' Enlighten technology now enjoys a new integration into Unreal Engine 3. Enlighten allows amazing control over real-time lighting and looks to be a powerful tool for those wishing to add it to UE3. Be sure to check out the UE3 demo (from GDC 2010) below the quotes.

"Providing developers with outstanding tools is a top priority for Epic, and we are making it easier than ever to produce visually stunning games with UE3 tools and the Enlighten integration," said Dr. Michael Capps, president of Epic Games. "A number of this year's biggest games are using Geomerics' solution with Unreal Engine 3, and we're making sure that process is easier than ever."

"We're thrilled to join Epic's IPP and already be working with some amazing UE3 developers," said Chris Doran, founder and chief operating officer of Geomerics. "The combination of Enlighten's dynamic lighting technology and UE3's superb authoring tools make a truly compelling proposition for developers. With Enlighten and UE3 the next generation of games technology has already arrived."

That's some cool stuff there.
I would like to try this out, though. From what the guy said it sounded like the only downside of a slower computer was the quality of the lighting and not the actual framerate (which is most likely bound to suffer, anyway, but still...)

Indeed, that's pretty neat.

Well, you can usually get a better framerate by lowering the game quality already. Although Unreal Engine titles are notorious for lowered quality not giving much more in terms of framerate as opposed to scaling the resolution.

will unreal engine 4 ever come out ?

also, can we till call it unreal engine 3 ? shouldn't it be frankenstein's engine 3 considering that there are so many plugins ? :p

anyways, for UE4 to keep the good stuff, there should definitely have most if not all the previous external features supported directly. good luck, Sweeney !

Geomerics has been in the IPP for four years already - I'm anticipating that the difference now is that it will be already integrated into UE3. About time really, since Epic basically snubbed them prior to lightmass, and these guys lighting solution is now capable of running a little faster than the Epic default.

Since Epic sent us the press release yesterday I was sitting here thinking you were nuts, but then I remembered the name and looked it up. Sure enough http://www.beyondunreal.com/view_story.php?id=10268 Feb 19, 2007. What they've done is announced a new integration with the engine. The problem is that it reads almost exactly the same way as their standard IPP releases, especially when you read the quote.

I've edited the original story above to more accurately reflect the intent of the news release.

For clarification, here it is in full:

GEOMERICS ANNOUNCES NEW ENLIGHTEN INTEGRATION WITH UNREAL ENGINE 3

Newest dynamic lighting features integrated with UE3 pipeline as Geomerics joins Epic’s Integrated Partner Program

CAMBRIDGE, UNITED KINGDOM (July 20, 2011) – Geomerics announce a powerful integration of its premier cross-platform lighting solution, Enlighten, with Epic Games’ award-winning Unreal Engine 3 (UE3) is now available to licensees. Through its membership in Epic Games’ prestigious Unreal Engine 3 Integrated Partners Program, Geomerics maintains code and feature parity for Enlighten in step with the engine as it evolves.

Enlighten empowers game developers by providing the ability to update all aspects of indirect lighting in real time, in game, on PC and console. Instant feedback from Enlighten inside UnrealEd enables artists to iterate rapidly on lighting and opens up new worlds of creative possibilities. Enlighten's fully dynamic global illumination technology, fused with the power of UE3, produces new levels of dynamism that were previously not thought possible on this generation of consoles.

“Providing developers with outstanding tools is a top priority for Epic, and we are making it easier than ever to produce visually stunning games with UE3 tools and the Enlighten integration,” said Dr. Michael Capps, president of Epic Games. “A number of this year’s biggest games are using Geomerics’ solution with Unreal Engine 3, and we’re making sure that process is easier than ever.”

We’re thrilled to join Epic’s IPP and already be working with some amazing UE3 developers,” said Chris Doran, founder and chief operating officer of Geomerics. “The combination of Enlighten’s dynamic lighting technology and UE3’s superb authoring tools make a truly compelling proposition for developers. With Enlighten and UE3 the next generation of games technology has already arrived.”

In addition, Geomerics led a special learning session on dynamic lighting with UE3 at last week’s Epic Developer Day in London. Geomerics will provide a similar lecture for GDC Europe attendees entitled “Seeing the Light: Next-Gen Game Technology Has Arrived” at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 15.
