"Coal Rollers" are diesel trucks modified with chimneys and equipment that can force extra fuel into the engine causing dark black smoke to pour out of the chimney stacks. These modifications are not new, but as Slate's Dave Weigel pointed out on Thursday, "rolling coal" has begun to take on a political dimension with pickup drivers increasingly viewing their smokestacks as a form of protest against environmentalists and Obama administration emissions regulations.

There are some truly insane people in this world.

I saw some of the Sin City trucks doing this & assumed it was only 'legal' on private land & even then only in a few states?

Indeed there is no way that'd be legal in California.... but easily in Idaho.

All in all it's pretty horrible. And I'm all for "those who can" having overpowered 4x4 trucks ... just keep them clean.

There's a bunch of these douchebags here in NC. I just think of it as the redneck version of ghetto culture and that seems to work.

Please understand that this is not a 4x4 or off-road thing; this is just a dumb redneck thing. In reality, the off-road community generally has a lot of respect for the environment.

+1

There are a lot of these shmucks in Waco, I work with one of them. He polishes his truck constantly and would never think of doing anything that a truck is actually designed for. I don't know anybody else who does this for comparison but he quite lives up to the term 'douchebag' in most senses of the word. He once took out a payday loan to get his teethe whitened and botox. He even filed for a week of medical leave to 'recover'. Though redneck doesn't quite seem the right term to me. Definitely country and extremely vain though.

Stick this guy in a wrangler button down shirt, blue jeans, and cowboy boots and you have your perp.

somewhere; sometime?
Such an easy solution yet it would probably be amazingly effective and we'd all be better off for it.
these ignorant sister fuckers will literally do anything in direct opposition to the President just because he's Barrack Hussein Obama, his skin isn't the color of their skin, and he's sitting in the Oval Office instead of the faggot they voted for. no other reason required.

Obama should draft an EO that makes it illegal for red necks to drive their pickup trucks off of very high cliffs.
then we can sit back, pop some popcorn, and watch the show.

As a BuF member who has been labeled both as a conservative and a treehugger on these forums I find myself conflicted by this comment... except that I don't consider myself a conservative nor do I own a diesel. So no, I have never "rolled coal" upon myself... or anybody else for that mater. Also as a former diesel mechanic, albeit for landscaping equipement, I always tuned them so they burned as clean as possible. And though I am not positive, I am pretty sure it is in violation of emissions laws in most places already. As just like gasoline engines there are fairly rigid laws for diesel also.

Just for the sake of info(probably duh content for most of you): The black is the result of carbon. (I have heard argued that it is the sole or nearly the sole component. That is blatantly false.) Basically to "roll coal" you must increase the fuel in the fuel-to-oxygen ratio drastically or conversely decrease the oxygen. Which of course means more contaminants now along with diesel vapor in the exhaust.
This page has a list of known contaminants that accompany the carbon... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_exhaust
