please help! cant import model + textures

hi

im only just gettin to grips with this software.....

i have a textured model in 3ds max 9 that i want to import into my level in the unreal editor.

when i export it from max as an ASE file and import it into unreal it says "ase importer warning ; this object has no material"

but i ticked the material box whilst exporting?????

any help would be very much appreciated..:(
