HUD items that could be removed:
1. Stamina bar (breathing, heartbeat tell you)
2. Posture (If using true 1st person, then just glance down at yourself)
3. Current weapons carried (only pops up when switching, dropping, picking up, changing weapons and equipment or when QA menu button is held)
4. Weird little diamond above posture icon
5. Reinforcements left (leave this on the F1 menu)
6. QA button (only show when pressing QA key or opening menu)
7. Compass (just have a real 3d compass to glance at)
8. Text box could be much less obtrusive
--That's everything!
In the future, we will probably need to had a wound icon to the HUD to tell you where you hurt, why you can't use your right arm and such.
I think this is pretty on target. I think most elements of the HUD can be changed to pop-up thingies which only apear when you use them. For example, the weapon selecting indicator can be invisible, and pop-up (or fade in) breifly when you switch weapons. The compass could be a 'weapon' that you switch to, or there could be a compass 'quick action' button where you take one hand off of your gun, pick up the compass, and bring it in view. I don't think a posture indicator is really necessary; if your view is 6 feet off the ground, you know you are standing, if you view is 4 feet off the ground, you know you are crouching, and if your view is down by the floor, you know you're prone. The fire mode indicator could just be a pop-up like the weapon switch, or it could be a small HUD element in the corner.
I don't think listening to breathing really works as a stamina indicator, because IRL the sound of your breathing doesn't change much according to how tired you are; you will start breathing heavily when running for more than a few seconds, but it will remain more or less the same till after you stop running. It's not like the Inf player is having an asthma attack when he runs out of stamina. RO does "breathing sound cues" successfully, but I don't think it's really accurate to how breathing sounds in real life. You know how much you can run by how you feel. A stamina bar isn't necessarily the most realistic way to respresent "tiredness" either, but I can't think of any other way to do it off the top of my head.

"Soldier! You are currently holding the M8 unified weapon system. It is currently in the automatic firing mode. In the event you forget what you are holding, we have provided an icon on your Landwarrior heads-up-display."
LOL!
