Beyond3D got a hold of Epic co-founder, Tim Sweeney. The subject of the interview centers around the Unreal Engine and what lies ahead.

With consoles being more attractive than the PC in terms of profits, how does this affect the way game engines are being designed that simultaneously target both platforms?

Next generation console weighs verily heavily on our minds for the third generation Unreal Engine, and is going to be a major focus of ours both from a game point of view and an engine point of view. Can't say more yet, though.

I think they mean to have other license the Unreal Engine for console game development, so it will be as widely used on consoles as it is on the PC. Seems a logical path to take, this is bussiness that has to expand, not a hobby project, don't forget that :)

They better not design the Best Engine around for Consoles as a priority.
Marketing & being popular > best engine ... just look at Windows.

It makes more sense to develop for consoles, given the amount of profit that can be earned.

On a similar note, I was reading the latest issue of Wired last night and they had an article about the autonomous robot race sponsored by Darpa coming up soon. They mentioned how one of the teams was using the Unreal engine to model the terrain and plot the best course for the robot. Kinda interesting.

The article is online here

The prospect of all this competition has prompted some teams to upgrade their designs. Whittaker brought on game developer Zombie Studios to help collect information on other entrants and write a driverless robot race simulator, based on Unreal. The sim will game out whether it is better to lead or follow, for instance, as well as test scenarios for passing different vehicles in traffic.
