I think he was asking why HK decided to put a bolt hold-open on the 10/40-series of MP5.

This was mandated by the FBI when they requested HK build them a 10mm MP5 submachine gun. Since all HK roller-locked weapons do not have this feature it had to be custom built. Many people say it's a good thing, since it helps to speed reloading when you empty the magazine. But HK purists claim it's unnecessary since it's considered "bad form" to empty a full mag out of an MP5 without doing a tactical reload. Personally, I say use as many rounds as you've got!

i didn't think it was that hard to follow

ok, owl, i'll try to help.

back on page one, gryph and shak were arguing about reloading an MP5 (as the name may suggest), or more closely to the point, whether you take the mag out before or after you lock the bolt back.

then shakken decided to teach me (again ;)) something i didn't know.

now gryphon is explaining the origins of the MP5/40A3, which is still somewhat relevant to the topic because it concerns reloading methods.

that good enuff or u still lost ?

tactical reloads

Hey, this is two-for-one:
1) hands-down the best tactical mod I've ever seen
2) mod makers who know what they are talking about!

Now that i've shamelessly spooged, on to the meat.

I was never instructed on the MP-5, but have fired one and I agree with Griffen and ShakKen. There is a problem here, though. We're talking about fine motor skills under stress. When the gun goes *click* it may be one of a lot of problems, like a misfire or jam. The bolt comes back, the mag is dropped and we fetch a new one. If the loaded mag goes in before the bolt is racked, we might be inducing a worse jam.
AFAIK, this is why HK teaches their technique, because when that gun doesn't go bang, we are in a world of hurt.
