kernel32 crashing

first, my specs:
p3 866 384mb winME
1280x1024 32-bit
openGL
ati radeon 64mb ddr VIVO
high-def textures

i have the latest beta opengl dll. (the 124k one). the 100k one that installs with the patch does not crash, but makes everything blindingly bright, gets rid of detail textures, coronas, and generally makes the game butt-ugly. also, adjusting brightness does not affect it.

now, my problem: whenever i try to start up UT, it crashes with a kernel32.dll error. i have to start it in d3d, then change it into opengl. it's a friggin' pain in the ass.

what gets me so bad though is that i had this problem before, and the way i fixed was COMPLETELY REINSTALLING unreal tournament. that is *not* something i want to do.

what i think caused it (which is what caused it last time) is i tried upgrading my vid drivers, and after noticing that it was laggy as hell, i downgraded back to my previous drivers.

can someone tell me what the hell is going on here, and if there's a way to fix it *other* than complete reinstallation?

Generally the error message will tell you what's causing the fault, such as the example below:

DEVLDR16 caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167:bff88396.

doesnt matter. i'm actually starting to think that d3d is faster in UT on my computer.

i remember getting an average of 20-30fps on ctf-shadar adn remembering how much that pissed me off, but now in d3d i have an average of 50fps :p
