An interview over at Canada.com has Josh Holmes, Vice President and Studio Manger for Propaganda Games answering a few questions about the developement of Turok on the PS3 and why porting the Unreal Engine to PS3 delayed the game.
Was it harder to develop on the Playstation 3? Did you have any troubles? If you lead on the PS3, you don't have any problems taking that and moving it to the 360. But if you lead on the 360, and duplicate it on the PS3 it can be a little bit more challenging, and for us as an Unreal engine game, our lead platform was the Xbox 360 and that's why it took a little bit more effort at the end to the PS3 comparable to the 360. But that's something we planned for knowing that the 360 would be our lead platform.
What to find out more about the developement of Turok? Read it all here.

So it begs the question: Why didn't they just use the PS3 as the lead platform? Criterion, the makers of Burnout Paradise made the PS3 the lead platform and they said that doing so actually made for a better Xbox 360 game as a result.

that's interesting indeed. and he also says in that interview that the publisher makes platform choices. that almost sounds like the ps3 version might have been kind of an after-thought. although this kind of decision seems like something you should get straight once you start working on the project imho.

btw - does anyone know how it works? you build a prototype game, show it to some publishers and whoever's interested you sit down with and talk about contract conditions (unless you're already under contract, obviously)?

what's really sad, though, is what he says about the pc version. they didn't want to be 'distracted' by the pc version
'go away, pc, we're working on the REAL game!' :(

I would imagine that they lead with the 360 game because of the order in which Epic optimized the Engine. The 360 went first because of Gears and the PS3 was finished up with UT3. That's how it works.

The PS3 users have UT3 so they can wait.
Apparently Turok is a lot of suckage, I'd like to try it out and find out.

Something like 80% of games are lead on the 360. It often makes more sense to make the 360 the lead platform because publishers and developers know that is where the most money is and the 360 tools are generally easier to develop with initially.

With multiplatform games, the 360 versions historically outsell the PS3 by a factor of more than 2. In fact, for many third party publishers, one single 360 title will outsell all their PS3 titles combined. This is due to the larger install base and the much higher attach rates.

That's is one way it can be done, but most developers don't work like that unless they are just starting out and trying to make a name for themselves. Unless a developer is being funded by a publisher, making a game is a very expensive and risky proposition.

Most often a publisher will hire a developer to make a specific IP that they own (or have licensed). It is fairly rare for a developer to actually own the IP rights of the games they are making.

Under Articstronghold's bridge
Sony sacrificed their PS brand in order to dominate bluray, and they succeeded. PS3 as a game platform is:
1. expensive
2. Pain in the a$$ to develop (ID, Epic said so, Valve did not even bother, Crytek said no PS3 port lololol)
3. Lacking when compared to xbox live (free version)

/Sony bashing :D

If bluray had died a painfull death, there would be hope to see Sony making a comeback on the next console. As it is now I can see the Sony business analysts dancing and yelling for their "good" idea to put game+home cinema+media center into one product.
