I don't know what they would have done about the leaked oil, sure. But they've been better than good about capping the well, IMO.

First of all, I want to say that instead of commenting about the closed well I was busy helping underprivileged, homeless, abused, amputee minority kids. With Terminal illnesses.

. What on earth makes you think they have any motivation to save the Gulf's ecosystem? No oil company in history has ever been that conscientious.

Interesting question and I suppose the main motivations would be to:

1. Preserve their well and the resources within
2. Avoid a public backlash which could damage their revenues / stock prices
3. Avoid looking like complete assholes for generations to come and to their families and friends

The natural follow up to that question would be: What on earth makes you think they have any motivation to avoid capping the well?

hal, sorry for not replying to you on that burka thread. It's not lack of consideration, I just forgot.

After that, let me tell you that I've just blown Glenn Becks' head of with the gun of the "racist homophobic gun toting terrorist, nazi republican that chops trees down and burns oil to cook his high fat dinner and lite his cigarette 80,000 feet from the nearest human.", stole his beer, want to share it with you and take the next shift on helping underprivileged, homeless, abused, amputee minority kids.

no mention of them finally getting it sealed?
I think this article sums it up. I remember reading about them putting the new cap on and thinking how long was it going to be before the bad news part of the equation hits? There is just a feeling of doubt and fatigue with the thing, making celebration a delayed one.

god, I swear Obama... "We" fixed it...
While obviously BP were the people doing the bulk of the work with the brunt of the efforts, it wasn't like the administration was sitting on their hands doing nothing and staring. How much did they really help? I would put my money on just a little bit, but it is the lovely, wonderful world of politics where every politician will take whatever percentage they can grab onto and claim their spot on the winning team.

I'm still really waiting to see what happens next. The aftermath of this is going to be hugely important.
