Duke Nukem 3D is another game I've been playing again lately, and it's as awesome as ever. It looks fantastic with the HRP and EDuke32 with the Polymer renderer, but it also runs like utter shit (even my HD5850 has issues running it smoothly because of the insane overuse of shaders.) With that said I still prefer it with the original sprites/textures. Duke Plus is also nice, but it does use 3D models for some of the new weapons which looks really ugly if you use them in-place of the original sprite-based weapons.

I had forgotten how hard this game is. It could just be Duke Plus and it's enhanced AI option, but even on Piece of Cake I die very regularly. The pig cops are particularly brutal; I've been one-shotted by them more times than I can count on both hands.

I played Duke fairly recently with the Megaton Edition - its a decent port. It hasn't got the modding capability of EDuke, but its a nice no-nonsense way to play the main game. I used to map the fuck out of Duke as a kid using the BUILD editor. But overall I still think Doom is a better game - the enemies are more varied, and in general it just feels a bit more precise and solid. Duke3D has this oddly unpleasant floaty quality to its movement, I find.

Also EDuke32 is made BY A CHILD PREDATOR KITTEN MURDERER HOW DARE YOU USE IT DARKED YOU ARE A TERRIBLE PERSON

seriously though, eDuke with a solid HRP is an awesome experience.
even more enjoyable than Doom for me, because the Duke franchise is just so good with the comedy and level design. especially if you've got the original bonus episodes.

I've got Duke 3D Atomic Edition plus Duke it Out in DC where you save Bill Clinton from the aliens and fight through all the historic landmarks on Washington Mall.
dick jokes are used adequately.

I personally prefer Doom because it's more straightforward. Open door, fire gun, watch the monster die. And every now and then, you find a key. Or a secret area.

Duke seems like it has a lot more side stuff that takes away from the action.

I only have the Atomic edition from the Plutonium pack. I never did play any of the expansions.

Anyone ever use the build editor to make maps? I remember having so much fun with that back in the day. I would make so many porno maps. :D

I played around with it back in the day, after Unreal came out. I eventually gave up because I liked the way UnrealEd did things a lot more. The same happened with the Radiant variants (idTech editor.) I did finish some HL maps in QuArK, though :D

You can say that again.

Yeah, it's incredibly bad  It really seems like the Polymer renderer has zero optimization.

I rocked the shit out of BUILD.exe back in the day. Also Mapster32 or whatever the windows port was. Either way, I got pretty good at it, although I never really finished anything in it due to terminal laziness.

Also holy balls I found some screenshots I took of one such map I started, though the actual map is lost to the aether now.

The lines/theme of the original 2d duke nukem (renamed to duke nukum at one point to avoid a lawsuit, ever heard of that?) are the best still. And I think duke 3d would have been better game if they stuck to the original idea of more of a followup to duke2(though duke2 was certainly not that much focused on and there are so many things that can get irritating, bugs included), even the so incomplete lameduke seems to have better pace/playability. All the "woman abducting" shit is a little over the top i think. "She's tougher than she looks." alike lines of the lameduke beta would have sufficed. Of course there is something really good about the way Duke is voiced by JSJ but still...I like the humor in SW more because it's a bit reversed as Lo Wang hardly gets succesful with the ladies and usually gets the smack.
