I probably will not get it, as it seems to repetitive, although it is fun.

Maybe when it is modeed enough for more diversity, more environemntal traps and more open-world. And I think it is overpriced (And I am not one of those who only buys bargain-bin-games.).

Boss infected are way too easy to spot (you hear them from a mile away, unless you're in a middle of a fight). And for the most part they pose no threat as long as you're aware of their presence. Except for the tank of cause ;)

That's the idea, and is one of the things the director is used for. You can tell a boss is nearby by the music and post effects, let alone his groans.

Still, it's not always you have time to worry about a nearby smoker or hunter, and you're simply forked up the ass if you get snagged while roaming around alone. I like it.

If you think the game is repetitive, play on expert.

I should have been a bit more clear here. Gameplay (interaction with the Infected) is fine. I meant the routes through the environments. There are only very few and short alternate routes.
That's just a personal preference.

I will ultimately decide when it is out in Europe (Nov. 21st) since I need to buy it in a store anyways to be uncut for me (Germany).

Finally finished it on expert last night, and it took near 4 hours lol. Any game that takes that long to succeed and I can play with my friends, I'm getting. ;)

And that's just the first two levels.... expert kicks my ass, but it's fun to tweak strategies so you can get further.

only takes that long if you waste your time, horde after horde will come. Then you will waste even more time trying to regroup and heal up to which more hordes will come.

its a vicious cycle. If you want to get through the lvl quickly you have to get in and get out quick.

Sucks because you dont really get to enjoy any of the content because of the rush you are in and anything below expert just isnt challenging enough.

I have to wonder how many people would even buy that... if you have Steam I'd say there's a fairly good chance you have most of those games already.

I might eventually. It won't be 'til tax return time though, and only if I can hold out that long for L4D.

I've got HL2, and the episodes I "trickled down" (yeah I've been that broke since having kids.) to myself 'cause I wasn't interested in TF2 mostly due to the community I played with during the free weekend I tried out. Wasn't jazzed on Portal either since I got a bootleg copy of it, but it's been lost since my last formatting :(

I'd get the following for my $100:
Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic, Day of Defeat, Deathmatch Classic, Half-Life: Opposing Force, Ricochet, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, Half-Life: Blue Shift, Day of Defeat: Source, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, and I think a full version of Peggle Extreme. I've got a version supposedly but it's like a demo. (Yeah I actually kinda liked Peggle, it's a nice "relax for a bit before hitting the sack" kind of game.)

mostly seems like a bunch of outdated junk to me, but 50 for 1 game vs. 100 for like 4 or 5 I'll play regularly almost seems better.

maybe

L4D itself is damned intense though! I tried the difficulties and am synced into only playing on Expert now. Everything else got too easy too fast.

Incredible looking physics going on in this, tons of fun even solo, and the sounds,.. omg the sounds are breath-taking and work perfectly even on my weird two sound card set-up I'm still having trouble with.

Peggle is awesome, but the pack just comes with Extreme (the demo). Peggle Deluxe is more than worth it - I think I bought it during one Steam Weekend Sale for like $4.99. Peggle Nights looks interesting as well.

Uhh... same way TF2 is special, I guess. It's basically co-op, Valve style. There's honestly no one standout feature that's extremely new or unique, but there's lots of tiny tweaks to the co-op formula designed to make the game as accessible and frustration-free as possible. There's also a couple new ideas here and there and the whole package has been given that Valve-branded spit n' polish.

If there's one thing "special", I'd say that Valve seems to be promising additional depth and replayability rarely found in co-op action games. I mean, once you play through Gear of War with a buddy, that's it. Sure you can replay it later, but it feels like you're just retreading old ground. L4D seems to be designed so the content lasts and still feels fresh like competitive online games. It's a pretty noble thing. Whether it accomplishes this goal is, well, we'll have to find out in 6 months.

Having that said, the zombies here are closer to 28 day later's fast-moving zombies than Romero's. Unless you *really* hate the zombie theme, there's enough enemy variety here to differentiate itself from your usual zombie game.

Well, 'special' being in the eye of the beholder, I'll just list what I'm loving about L4D demo so far.

-the game artistically is just amazing. Valve imho has taken all the ideas for rendering effects, textures and all other visual effects they've improved the Source engine with over the last few games and damn near perfected them for this game.

-I've seen a couple clipping errors (arms coming through doors etc) but otherwise the arcade like high quality physics is awesome to see through all the hectic action. All the rag-dolling, and reactions even while victims are still alive and rag-dolling is done just beautifully.

-gore galore. Have yet to see more realistic gore in a game.

-The Difficulties feel like they were tailor made to my tastes/skill personally. From what I feel playing the AI director is IN MY HEAD MAN! It gets a lot trickier than just spawning zergs at you. It hits me with boss combos*, partial zergs followed by full on zerg rushes, and a boss thrown in for good measure, etc to keep me on my toes.

*I've been hit with a smoker pulling me with it's tongue, and had a Boomer puke on me mid-pull, I've also had a Boomer Puke on me, aggro'ing the witch nearby who kills in 1 hit. (boomer Puke attracts all zombos to the puke covered, blur-blinded brain buffet.)

- this seems to me to be one of the first games in a LONG time to which it's system requirements really are honest. this runs incredibly well even on my crappy mobo, but otherwise nice mid-range gaming rig.

-I 'fanboy out' for good zombie material, and I pick the bad stuff apart like a ravenous zombie horde. this is great zombie material here. Back story be-darned this is all about the visceral action of it for me.

-friendly fire makes what might otherwise seem like a brainless arcade style shooter a bit deeper than many people might give it credit for.

The only negative things I can say:

-the avg good level UT player is going to think that all but Expert difficulty is too easy.

- I wish the game had lean left/right keys for those of us who get stuck behind retards left praying for some open shots on the incoming hordes in cramped spaces.

Conclusion:

I'd buy this in a heartbeat if me and mine were a bit better off financially atm. But if you're not in to hectic, arcade style game play, or zombies this might not be your cup of blood.

(oh and these aren't the shambling "head shot bait" type zombies, these are those UK style, rabid infected, "run you down like a track star, curb stomp you, THEN maybe eat you" types.)

I loved PK for a short while, but L4D looks so much crisper, cleaner, more fluid. imho Valve really took the Source engine's realism capabilities to the limit, and then further polished it up somehow.

Good gawd I'm marking out for this game like a 'tard aren't I?

You know what I don't like? You can't see the dynamic light casted by your teammate's flashlights. Nor the dynamic shadows that their flashlights cast. Kind of sucks when you're in near pitch black rooms and the only light you see is from your own flashlight, DESPITE having three teammates who also have flashlights.

I guess it's a bandwidth and/or processing issue though. Calculating dynamic shadows is taxing enough for a single light source, but having to do it for four light sources that are moving in real time is probably just too much to ask for.

Still though, it's something that I wish to see in future games.

4 player coop with replayable maps. Sounds simple, but there really aren't any games I can think of that offers it.

The replayability isn't groundbreaking - it's just dynamic monster and powerup spawns - but it keeps you watching your back and exploring, as opposed to running a fixed route between the powerups while throwing grenades down corridors you know are gonna spawn that boss and such.
