Hey Jim :)

I am in a clan now - I wasn't for the longest time, but really I play all my games on public servers. I think most clan members do too. That is, aside from the odd clan match, but as I said these are not extremely regular for most clans. We play on the publics to improve our skills like everyone else. Where else can we play regular games??

And as for feeling in the way, I guess I can relate to that feeling, but it is really just a state of mind. Just accept your position on the skill ratings and have fun. There may be factors hindering you (like 56k or one arm or something ;)) but just as in real life people have all different levels of skill... you don't complain if Pete Sampras kicks your ass in tennis for example - you just accept that you weren't born with the same skill, and have fun playing where you are at.

And if players constantly annoy you, just go elsewhere. I'm sure there are some servers where you can find some peace.

Good Luck.

uhhh?

OK, one, we have clan xeno here whining about our play style without every saying squat to us about it. I just heard about this post which is why it took so long to respond.

as far as the rudeness of the players of CNU? what a load of crap.

We played the game, we won, we told them good game, some of our members have auto taunts on and others have some taunts macro'ed, yes that includes the "you suck" phrase. (Xeno didn't even say good game when it was over, they all just quit)

So if you cant hack 1. losing or 2. ppl using programmed phrases that are part of the game. maybe your the one who needs to grow up.

I think its sad that some team who is sore about losing so badly has to try and slander the reputation of the other clan by posting half truths on a popular UT forum.

That is your play style? Exactly my point. And I have tried to say something to one of the other clan's and got promptly kicked from their chat channel. Uh, yeah. I wouldn't have expected any different from them, though. Maybe now after reading about the other people in here that have had similar problems with clans like this, it will change. Maybe.

---
Rudeness of CNU. I am not the only one who believes this, so there must be something going on. And don't think you are the only one. There are others that I have luckily erased from memory. This thread is not really about CNU in particular, it is about trying to mature computer gaming.

---
I have UT set to NOT display auto-taunts, and that wasn't one of my biggest complaints. It was being reminded of the score that was my biggest beef. And, your defense is that your team typed 'gg'. Funny, quoting FROM the only score screenshot I have...

^CNU^ArMenion: LOL AND balls
^CNU^ArMenion: gg

In that order (maybe I am misinterpreting the first part, but it wasn't the worst I saw). While your whole team is doing groin thrusts around your flag. Nice touch. :/ Well, we typed 'gg' too.

1. Yes we can hack losing. That is part of life.
2. 'LOL AND balls' is part of the game? '15-0', '16-0', '17-0', '18-0', '19-0', '20-0', '21-0' are part of the game? If you are also talking about the regular taunts, people use them online ALL the time and none of us really even hear them anymore. Except of course when they are being spammed.

---
So, you once again need to point out that we 'lost so badly' AND make an assumption that we are sore about losing. As I posted we DID expect to lose. And what exactly were the 'half truths' I posted? Granted, ^CNU^TheRealKing may have accidently joined as spectator.

half truth number one: king was logged into server, but from webadmin.

number two: your clan member was dang near 2 hours later, and we could have been jerks and said play 3v4 in our favor since ogl states we only have to wait 15 minutes, but we were decent enough to wait dang near 2 hours.

number three: we did not quote the score throughout the game, we quoted it in our chat room, you were kicked from the chat room because the rest of the team was riled about the win and one of our members didn't want u to see what they were saying.

number four: armenion said "balls in your mouth, hahahaha" which is a macro that he use's its an irl joke between me him and hokus cause we all live on the same block, work at the same shop on the same shift.

number five: u failed to point out your players screaming "BS" cause they were killed while running the flag.

1. I am on the Epic Admin list. WebAdmin does NOT log you in as a spectator.

2. You guys had no server (which makes me wonder about number 1), we had no server. I was talking to about 4 other admin's to get an empty and clean (no mutators) server. One of which I was in the middle of setting up, which is why I joined at the last second. And one of our players had gone to his office to try and set up a server, which didn't run so hot. So yes, he did take a couple minutes to get back home.

3. You DID quote the score in the last 7 minutes or so. That really pissed me off, and I remember it well. One comment was something along the lines 'If we suck then why are we kicking your butts, 18-0', 'hey look 19-0', etc., etc., ad nauseum.

also if you had read my previous post, I said that a PREVIOUS clan had kicked me for confronting them about the attitudes. But nice to know you would have anyway.

4. Now that you mention it, yeah, I saw that one too. If it is an inside joke, then keep it inside. For your info you can change 'Say' to 'TeamSay' to keep from upsetting people. If it was harmless, why only derogatory comments the whole game? Are there any other kind? Whipping us 21-0 wasn't enough? I could imagine watching Tennis and seeing a player with a big lead start harrasing the opponent. That would be funny. Rackets would be flying... But would it REALLY be necessary??? Try saying 'Balls in your mouth' to a client after you just told them they have lost all 20GB's of data on their drive. Funny, to you maybe. Appropriate? NO! I believe it is TeamPlay.net that has now added a ref to their games to mediate this kind of behaviour. A positive step to avoid these types of situations and hopefully eliminate these long threads.

5. Yeah, I did point out that I started being verbally abusive after 20 minutes of playing with you guys. You are failing to see my point. It should never have happened, but you guys were really no fun to play with. At least not that night. We sat through it because that was at least respectable.

This is not about CNU. This is about clans not only beating their competition, but beating out their interest in playing (insert game title here) anymore. Which does no one anygood, except for braggin rights to say 'We made them disband'. Is that really something to brag about? Gaming is moving beyond this. I hear of lots of hotheads being kicked out of clans for acting inappropriate, or at least getting verbal warnings from their peers. I am the captain for Team Canada [Q3 x4 / UT x4 / starcraft x4 ] going to the WCGC in Korea which is hosted by Samsung (sorry for the plug but I am trying to get a point across here). We will not stand for verbal taunting or anything even REMOTELY close to that. In game or out. That is just not professional. They will be sent home [Canada] after one warning.

look, im sorry if you or someone else was offended by speech bindings or our macros.

im sorry if the game isn't fun for you anymore.

there's nothing i or any of the others of CNU can do about it now.

our intention was not to be insolent or rude, if you or any others of xeno percieved it that way, we are sorry.

Clans who act like arseholes online either have problems with their clan or with the people in their clan.

I agree that the Q3A clan scene seems more "mature", but then again the Quake scene has been around a lot longer. You don't get fine wine from putting a few grapes in a blender and serving within 5 minutes ;)

People should just have respect for each other and win or lose with dignity. Remember, without the opponent there is no game.

I have a suggestion. Everyone should refrain from commenting or posting on this issue for one week. Don't post on this issue again until October 9. Think about this and let the heat of the moment pass.

Thanks

Howdy,

I think some of us have forgotten why we bought this game in the very first instance.

Because it looked like fun, or because a friend told us it was great fun.

Surely the reason you guys bought the damn game wasnt because you heard that you could get overly serious about it and get into arguments and speak crap to people.

Of course, correct me if Im wrong.

I bought the game in the beginning because a friend told me about the fun he'd had playing it and the graphics Id seen from the game looked terrific.

I played it for a while and the natural competitive instinct in me pushed me to improve and expect more of myself in relation to my ability to play the game.

Then I got asked to join a clan. I started to think I had to win every game I was involved in, and if i didnt win Id go berserk and smash my keyboard with telephone books and bite my mouse etc. Loads of dumb things.

Then I realised, I wasnt enjoying the game anymore. All i enjoyed was the winning, and the losing caused me to feel bad and act like a babyish idiot.

Now I still play in the same clan, but its more of a social thing to me. I still like to do well, but Ive realised it is a game and thats all. Enjoy it and have some fun with your clan mates, and other clans as well.

Win with grace and humility - lose the same way.

Above all - HAVE FUN - thats why the game was made.

Sermon over.

i too experienced some truly sh!tty sportsmanship last night. as most of you know, i haven't been able to REALLY sit down and play since the end of may (lovely dsl problems) and finally i had my first clan match in months. i was pretty damn psyched about it.. the maps were face, hydro, then orbital as tiebreaker.

i stopped in their irc channel before the game and couldn't help but laugh at these guys.. some (maybe not exact but funny nonetheless) quotes:

'oh man, my ngstats dropped from 300 to 500.. this is horrible'
'ut is down, i can't get on any servers'

we were having a problem getting our people together for the first game, and the other team had no server.. so of course it was on us to find a server to play on. we find one, and get everybody on there.. we were being cursed out big time, being told to 'hurry the f*ck up' and the other team kept making comments like 'oh, this will be too easy..'

so anyways, face begins. what a surprise, telepunting and lameness like that. we ended up losing 3-2, and instead of a 'gg' we got a 'i was right, this WAS too easy'. these people were spamming constantly saying 'this is bullsh!t, the server is too slow' (when it was on 100 game speed mind you) and actually asked us to bump it up to 140. laughed it off but they were serious..

so hydro was pretty ugly for them, lets just say they didn't get anywhere with our flag the entire game. ;)
i couldn't help but comment with 'this was too easy' after that one.

then came the tiebreaker, orbital.. 3 of their 5 members had to actually make us wait 10 minutes for them to download the map from the server because they didn't have it. i couldn't help but laugh at them picking a map nobody even knew, so they got trounced by over 2x what our score on hydro was.. hehe

anyways just sharing my story of poor sportsmanship and the redemption that followed afterwards.. totally has nothing to do with xeno and cnu but does pertain to the original topic. ;)

i'm finding too many lamers in the game now.. makes it so frustrating to get back into it. i still think us puf peoples should get together and try to make a scrimmage pool sometime.. then we wouldn't have to deal with the llamas. :p

SCRIMMAGE POOL!!!

I have been so all over an idea like this for a long time. All the clans I want to play are pretty much PuF clans..I've even tried to arrange some scrims, sent out e-mails and everything...no one responded :( We've just recently joined PG, our first ladder and have played 2 games and cancelled 1. While not necessarily BAD experiences, neither of the 2 games were anything special in the way of sportmanship. I've tried to be optimistic about it, and hope that this is as bad as it gets, but I dunno. Our next match looks like it'll be really good though. I checked out their webpage, and they've got some rules of conduct there and an overall priority of having fun. But sometimes webpages preach it, but members don't follow it. :/

And as for what Mrukk said, I agree. I may be in a clan, but outside of practice and the occasional clan match (which happens about once a week or less), all my games are on public servers just like everyone else. Where else can I go to play with a full server of players, usually better than me, where I can improve, try new tactics, and learn others? While scrims are a great idea...I just can't seem to get any together :(

"C'mon people now, Scrim with yer brothers. Everybody get together, try to frag one another, right now." :D

Let's get it rolling!

If you are willing to set something up I would certainly come! I am sure I can get some of the guys out for a scrim too.

I will be gone for the next 2 weeks however, so I may (please let there be free computers!) be online, I may not.

You can email ronin@xenoclan.com as well.

Y'know..the more I think about it, the more upset I am at the behavior of the last clan we played. I won't name them. If you're enterprising enough, you can figure it out for yourself...but here's my rant, since this thread seems to be the place for it. :)

First of all, they never responded to my e-mails about finding a server until the day of the match. So I was already a little pissed about it. Then they were just plain condescending to me in their channel. Their basic attitude was "you won't have a problem with our server." What if we did? Bah..fortunately, their server was fine, but it was still a crappy attitude to have. And it turned out we only played 4v4. Which is fine, I just wish we would have known earlier. It was one of the questions I had asked in my emails.

Then, the matches. First off, they completely slaughtered us. They were much better players. The scores were 8-0, 14-0. No contest. But I noticed that during watching the demo of the second map, they still taunted constantly. Everytime they killed us I'd see a "Useless", "Try turning the safety off", "Try a bigger gun", "I am the alpha and the omege", etc... Gee...how lovely it must be to both slaughter and humiliate your opponent. These weren't auto-taunts either..I have those turned off. I don't mind the occasional taunt..especially if it's good natured. But we were having a hard time of it..they didn't need to do that. It doesn't bother me so much, but I know my team was especially frustrated, and I feel personally responsible if my team doesn't have a good time. I don't think they did.

Several of my guys also mentioned that they felt this clan was rather rude in their IRC channel. I was having IRC problems that night, so I didn't see most of it.

And finally, PG has switched to using Bollwerk104. Most of you know that I did the mod to this map, adding zones to it. I didn't do it for my health...I did it because I think zones are a vital..no...necessary part of any CTF map. Well...the server we were on didn't even have it installed...even though THEY chose Bollwerk as their map. When I complained that this wasn't the right version of the map, they got all pissed off at me. Something to the effect of "don't start pulling any bull****" or something like that (don't remember exactly). WTF?? PG sent out an e-mail to all team captains about the map change. Eventually I just said **** it and we played on 103...but it still pissed me off. We offered to play 104 on our server, but they didn't like that idea. (I believe the phrase was something like "your server sucks", or "your server is ****"...something like that...)

I said "gg", and didn't bitch 'em out in our match details, but thats only because it's in my nature. I don't want to be thought of as bad sports or a clan that complains about their matches. I want to enjoy the game and have clans want to play us because of that. But the more I think about this, the more it gets on my nerves...bah.

Anyways..../rant.

Come on over to the PG Dom ladder. That's the only one my clan plays on at the moment. We'll treat you dignity and respect, win or lose.
