The Chemputer: it's a computer that prints matter

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

somewhere; sometime?
remember the Universal Constructor in Deus Ex?
it could render organic or inorganic material at the press of a button?
yeah they're trying to do that now.

this guy Lee Cronin heads up a team of 45 scientists at Glasgow University where they're developing a machine that can construct complex molecules to create inorganic life. the goal was to eventually create life from scratch. but then he had an epiphany; maybe this machine is also capable of translating and rendering "downloadable chemistry" the same way that a CNC auto lathe creates 3D parts using 2D schematics.

in theory people will be able to literally "print out" their own pharmaceuticals.
and technically this means you could reproduce any type of drug that you have the plans for.

And no company or group will ever show any interest or research funds unless it can also replicate the thousands of years of heat and pressure needed to create indistinguishable diamonds.

As far as I'm aware, diamonds aren't remotely rare or valuable. Artificial scarcity is manufactured by De Beers, et al.
