because people like the idea that maybe one day they will get to handle the gun they play with in game...i'm sorry, but i think my INF training is enough for me to use my teachers MP5. he has some crazy guns! He has a shotgun with a shell drum! A DRUM!

BTW, I highly doubt i am ready for those bad-ass guns.

I love AK-47's. don't know what it is, but they rule.

I also wish for those realism mods to include some NEW guns instead of the usual Steyr AUG and the MP-5 Navy. We need something new!

I started asking around CS boards as to why it was so popular and the "realism" of running around with guns like MP5's and AK's was a very common answer.

But I'm in agreement - how many of them do we need?

As long as people support garbage, garbage will be all that we're given. The new Infiltration comes out, with more tweaks, unoriginal weapons and bugs than before and everyone falls all over themselves downloading it. Meanwhile truly great mods like U4E and U4E Fortress get little to no recognition cause the mindless drones are all out playing Infiltration/SF/TO/CS/whatever.

"Oh I get to play a game with an MP5!" whoopdie-doo. I can go to a gun range with an MP5 and its the same thing.

Maybe if the unrealism mods had an MP5 and an AK47, people would download them. But then the people would ONLY be using the MP5 and AK47.

realism lovers. I just wanna smack every one of them with a copy of Rainbow 6 and say "YOU'RE PLAYING UNREAL TOURNAMENT! WRONG GAME SUCKA!"

I bet anyone here $10 bucks that there will eventually be a realism mod that's over 300 megs. You know what I just realised? Some are bigger than all the stuff that is original to UT (I mean the levels, bot AI, ect.). I cant even find a half decent one that's under 50.

Well we're getting there. I believe Strike Force was 262 megs. No friggin way am I downloading 262 megs. Even on cable. Winzip would die of boredom waiting for it to unpack. There's probably 500 megs of stuff in there when unpacked.

Comes from the realism mod's desire to rewrite virtually everything, have as many possible guns as possible, 10 maps and 20 player models.

Me, just getting into modding, plan on using anything pre-existing I can. UT has some awesome models/textures/levels....

I don't hate them, in fact I kinda like them. I lurked and posted around the INF gang when it was comin about, talked to the Real Maps crew a bunch.

I just wonder why there has to be so many different ones, and I agree with the 100+ MB critique ... why are they so mammoth?

what was the WAR mod?

Actually there are a couple realism mods that are small. I'm a fan of realism mods myself, but I would play U4E over TO or INF anyday.

Here's a list of small realism mods:
AgentX
Combat Zone
Covert Force
Infiltration 2.75
nUT
Night's Edge: Wet Works

I'm pretty sure there are a couple others, but these are the ones that come into mind.

*yawn*

I doubt you have even played INF.
I wonder why they even let you review mods with that kind of bias opinion.

if your going to review mods you should be open to all types, realistic and unrealistic.

Completely agreed. That's like making the Pope review a Porno.

You ask why we like realism mods? Well, first of all, you have to remember. MODs like INF strive to be realistic-- but only to a point. You see, a fully realistic game (which in itself would be utterly impossible), would suck. Games like INF take many aspects of realism, tone them to a point of being more fun to play, and then take out some others.

For example, pain. Who wants pain? I'd rather have fun without the "added bonus" of losing an arm or a leg. So instead of going to 'nam, I'd rather play my Infiltration. Not only because it takes out the pain factor, but it's probably a hell of a lot more fun. I don't think 'Nam was very "fun".

I do also play Non-Realism games. Games like T2, UT, CS (joke there, if you didn't get it :D ), etc. I like them just as well. But, if you want to play a game with no mamby-pamby 50 shots to kill a man whilst flying through the air carying an arsenal that rivals the United States Millitary, all the while running and jumping full speed without breaking a sweat or your legs from the weight, then I play a game like Infiltration.

So really, the answer to your question is quite obvious. Why does someone play any game?

FUN!

Now I really don't care if your idea of "fun" isn't that. I personally don't enjoy RTS's like StarCraft and the like. But, if I were a reviewer, I would not say the game sucks because I hate the genre. I would probably not review it in the first place. If I did have to though, I would review it honestly and fairly, looking into the various aspects of the game, the mechanics, and the obvious time and effort and revolutionary ideas that were added into the MOD.

Also, I'd like to point out that INF weighs in at 277mb. If you don't want to download something that big, why does that make the game suck? First of all, you could grab all the files from FilePlanet on CD. Or buy the INF CD if that comes out. But why I ask myself would that detract from the score of a game? Did people complain because the full install of Diablo2 + Expansion weighed in at over 1.5 gigs? Geeze....some reviewers.

And finally, before I end this long-winded yet highly educational rant, I do not want to hear one person call INF a CS clone...if people did research, they'd find out INF came out first ;)

Well, I'll start out with the file weight here. You have to remember we are working off an engine built for a futuristic game (in the case of INF). And you have to remember that INF is striving for a lot of realism. What does that mean? A hell of lot of new code, maps, meshes, textures, sounds, etc. That all adds up-- greatly.

And why there has to be so many different realism mods? Well really, this works for anything. This world moves in different "waves" if you will. You have the waves of DotComs. Started with just a few, and what do you have next? A whole platoon of them.

Now, we all know what eventually happens-- most will die out. That's already started to happen. But, the few, the strong, and the proud will survive ;).

If you want this in a gaming perspective, look at MMORPGS.

The industry really started, IMHO, with the main ones-- UO, AC, EQ. Now what do you have / will have shortly now that companies have seen that this model is very successful? UO, AC, EQ, DAOC, AO, SB, Horizons, PlanetSide, Middle Earth, and on and on and on. We all know, the same is going to happen to many of these games as that happened to the dotcoms, will happen to the realism mods, and has happened to many other things in the past.

That my friend, is why there are so many of 'em :)

Oh, and to answer the original question.

when they are playing a game called UNREAL Tournament?

First of all, you aren't playing UT when you play a realism MOD. Especially one like INF-- it's to the point of a TC (I'm not 100% sure of the definition of a TC, but I feel it's pretty darn close). Yes, my friend, you are playing on the UT Engine. But for true realism MODs, that's where it ends.

Making a MOD is a non-profit thing to do. Instead of spending tons of time creating their own engine to release for free, they use existing engines with great programability-- such as UT.

With respect to reviewing of any kind:

You'd think that if you were going to review a MOD (or anything else, for that matter), you would review it in the context of the MOD's purpose.

Infiltration, Tactical Ops, Strike Force; these are all realism mods. Saying that a MOD sucks based on the mere fact that it is a realism mod (or any other kind of mod) says two things: (1) you think that the community is populated by a bunch of ****ing morons who don't really know what they want, and (2) you have enough time on your hands that writing such a review that is completely and utterly valueless is your last resort to kill the boredom and provide some kind of self amusement.

It is a realism mod. You wouldn't even consider downloading it or taking any review with merit if you didn't have some interest in the notion of a realism mod in the first place. Its called being sane. So, when you do a review, remember that the people reading the review of a realism mod are looking for a realism mod. Target audience, people. Target audience.

As far as the popularity of realism mods go, all I can say is that the media has gone super realism in the past few years. Saving Private Ryan was a big smash. It was also super-duper-realistic. No futuristic rayguns and plasma pistols. Just muddy, bloody, gritty grunts trying to tactically out-anything a dug in enemy under the knowledge that it only takes one shot to put you out or put you in a world of hurt. The action is intense. People want to play it. Maybe its just a phase. Maybe its just the in-thing for this half-decade. Who knows.

And of course they will be big. Perhaps this is because they aren't so much 'mods' as they are 'total conversions'. Very little, if anything, of the original game structure remains. You want high detail woodland, desert, arctic, and urban textures? You want CD quality original sound effects? You want professional grade maps to frag your buddies in? You want brand-spanking-new custom models that are smoothly animated and accurate down to the last detail? You going to have to pay the price. You going to have to get something that is comparable to the original game content in size. This isn't something that is limited to realism mods. Look at Marathon: Ressurection. This 'mod' is a total conversion of the original Marathon by Bungie Software to Unreal Tournament. Right now it weighs in at 67.6 Megs. All it has now are the (incomplete) weapons, a few player models, one enemy model, the first level, and a few multiplayer maps. By the time this thing is finished, I guarantee you it will be several hundred megs in size. There are a LOT more models, sound effects, and levels to be done.

Realism mod or not, its not like they are shoving them down our throats. You aren't forced to play them. If you don't like it, don't get it. Simple, no?

Hehe Black, I know what TC means I just wasn't sure if there was some set guidelines it had to meet (no exisiting stuff at all from the actual game) to be considered a TC.
