I can't believe that UT was released with the flak cannon. That weapon is SOOO easy to kill someone with you don't even have to use any effort! what were they thinking when they decided to keep it? better yet who was the one with the "Bright Idea" in the first place?? Don't get me wrong, UT is my favorite game of all time, but, man... It really takes a toll on the "Fun Factor". It's like some people can't even use any other weapon efficiently! That must be why I like CTF-Face so much.. There are none of those no-skill players we've affecionatly dubbed "Flak Whores".

ugh - what is with these all these lamers who have come out of the woodwork in the last week proclaiming which weapons should or should not be in UT?

I like the flak - I use it a lot - but just to be brief TDS, I have never, ever, found that people have killed me too easily or too odten with the flak! I guess if you develop your movement skills (which some who snipe constantly may not have refined very much) you will find that you are killed less often in ways you would not like to be.

lol - I can only imagine the complaints we would get from HPB's if every weapon was designed so it took immense skill to hit someone with it ;)

And while I'm at it, what is the definition of "skill" anyway? I hear that word thrown around so much.

Is it the ability to snipe someone's head off using the sniper rifle "from the hip"? Is it the ability to recognize that your flag carrier needs help and you should go out and help cover? Is it the ability to shock combo while strafing? Is it the ability to know where the enemy flag carrier is heading, and cut him off where you know he's going to be? Is it the ability to choose to fire a flak primary around a corner in Coret because it's the only weapon you have and you're likely to at least cause some damage around the corner?

I have no idea, all I know is that whatever "skills" are required for UT are nothing like skills required by, say, the gymnasts I saw on the Olympics tonight. Holy cow. That is skill. The ability to flick a mouse at the right instant does not even compare. Maybe we give ourselves too much credit by using that word. But I digress ...

I think that using the flak cannon in a situation in which you have the best chance of killing someone/helping your team is totally okay, regardless of silly generalizations that it's a "newbie" weapon and that it takes no "skill", when "skill" is just some nebulous entity of a word that no one can define in the context of UT. Whatever. The flak is a super weapon in certain situations, and there's no reason not to use it.

In position
Here we go again.
And what about the redeemer? And to load up more than one rocket? And the impacthammer?
Well, maybe we shouldn't have any weapon in UT.
We can go right kickboxing. Or we can all play chess.

First, I am not a spawn sniper. In fact, nothing pisses me off more than any kind of spawn camper.
Mrukk - There is a big difference between needing immense accuracy and skill to use a weapon efficiently and hardly having to aim at all.
Think about it.. I can get a kill with one well-placed shot with almost any weapon, but to hit someone (and inflict substantial damge) without even trying? This is what i base my opinion on.
I lag as bad as any other 56k, but I will not lower myself into using a weapon that requires no skill or effort. I don't like cheap frags. I like to EARN my kills.

Cut the crap

So loading up your rocket launcher with 6 rockets all the time is not lame, and what about shock whores. I payed for all of those weapons, so I'll use them to my liking.

If you think you die too much by flak, you should really reconsider your tactics, and why doesn't everybody stop whining about the weapons? EVERY weapon can be used in a way tham might seem irritating or lame.

Sniping is lame, shock ho's are lame, flak seems to be lame, rocketing is lame too, the snot-gun is just a spam weapon, just like the ripper. Yeah go ahead and take out all of the weapons. they're all lame anyway.
If you don't like the weapons, go play another game, it's part of UT. This reminds me too much of the Daikatane demo time on Mplayer, in no time ppl started to call the mines lame, duh? What is the use in not using a weapon? you tell me. I'm not going to alter my weapon use because some ppl can't avoid dieing by flak. I don't care.

Please stop this, We've heard this too often. All of the weapons are ok, even the redeemer. Camping is an artform, most ppl can't do it right. It may be annoying, and you might die a couple of times, but in no time you know their every move, their hideouts, everything, and most campers don't win the game.
If they manage to pull it off, then they might be good at it. But it's also kind of your own fault. You KNOW that a certain player is camping somewhere if you die a few times, so why go there again and give him the frag?
I had a duel yesterday, the guy was the server, I had a crap ping, and all of the powerups were on, even the translocator was available. But he was butchered. Did I use the exstra's, nope.

It's what YOU do, not what OTHERS do. Go practice.

Just for the record, Flak requires skill. Long distance flakking won't do, and the alternative mode is as hard as any weapon available.
Just because some ppl call it a newbee-no-skill gun, why do you believe them. Try the flak yourself sometime, use another nickname if you feel bad about your reputation, and you'll see. Flakking does not mean winning.

shocking requires less skill. most of the time there's enough time to make that one combo. and it deals massive damage.

Sorry if I sounded pissed, but I kind of disagree with you. :)

Pawn to Queen four ...

I use flak online, alot! (I'm sooo ashamed). Offline, I really don't use flak because it is nearly harmless. It is AMAZING how many shots it takes to actually kill someone with flak. (Unless you put it in their mouth or something. "Excuse me sir, but would you mind sucking the barrel of my flak cannon?")

Sky, you are confusing skill with skillZ. At any given time you will have any number of things that you could be doing. Choose well and actually do something worth doing and you may have skill. Do the "Rocket Foot Cha Cha", and you got skillZ dood. ;)

The people that scare me are the ones that pick just the right weapon for their situation, set up a killing shot and just KILL you. Sounds easy. It isn't. But you knew that.

Think I'll get a second phone line before I play people like that again so that I can call 911 and report my murder.

Thanks

Man, you hear "flak spammer" tossed around as a putdown so much on RA servers. There's a clan called [AFK], Anti FlaKkers, none of their members use flak at all, which I think is cool for them.

I like the flak gun and in certain situations, it can be DAMN satisfying to get a flak kill. And it's a weapon not without its own personal risk. Hot flak is the number two cause of suicide on self damage game types, ya know.

But the flak cannon is all about:

1. holding off an opponent at long range long enough for a teammate to escape (CTF) or to sneak up behind him for the kill (TDM)

2. in lograv matches, where most opponents are seriously gliding through the air most of the time, timing the flak and getting the angle right while YOU are gliding through the air

3. in one on ones, being able to outsmart your opponent and be stealthy enough to suddenly drop in right behind him for the flak kill

4. timing that long distance alt flak grenade just right, accounting for trajectory, gravity, prediction, and crossing the fingers

5. foiling the flak attack of an opponent by using cover and with the perfect countering weapon and tactic--it can be done:)

You're totaly right Nepenthe. I love the flak cannon. Just as I love all the other UT weapons. I play DOM and levels like Cinder and Olden wouldn't be the same without a flak cannon. How wonderful to kill a MID defender with one perfect flak lob or anticipate a NOOK runner with a round-the-corner flak primary.

If you can't live with flak, play Q3A or something. The flak cannon is there an I'm glad it is.

Yellow5 - I would have expected more from the moderator of this forum than an accusation that I am a spawn sniper. You assumed that I was, on the basis that i like Face??

Yup, I'm with Nep too. Flak is ok.

Actually the balance of weapons in UT is very good. For every situation you might end up in, there are at least 2 weapons to choose from, to save your ass. So if you don't like one weapon, like the Flak, use another. Mini's are a good alternative, but Flak works better for me on short range.

DamnSniper, Yellow wasn't accusing YOU of spawn sniping. You said you like face because there are no lame flak whores in that map. When in fact, Face has more lamers who spawn snipe, teleport camp and redeemer whore through the whole game. Yellow was pointing out your flawed logic on how you flame flak whores as being skilless, when the truth is more skilless people play Face (not saying you are skilless).

I understand the rant against flak users, but once you understand that every weapon in UT requires some skill (for the user and victim) then you will appreciate the flak more. Too many players try to combat a flak and shock whore up close. Don't! Move back, find another position and weapon. Someone spamming flak is easy to counter. You know where he is at, so switch to rockets and alt fire them into the area. Also, I suggest you play a practice game with all flaks. You will notice that the flak has three animations. Ask my clan mates about how I dodge the flak particles. No, I'm not awsome with my method, but it has saved me from numerous frags.

The flak pieces don't fill up the room to a point where you can't dodge, run or crouch in between the pieces. Take time to learn how to counter each weapon and you will notice the ease of fighting a player using the flak.

Remember, each weapon can be countered by another weapon. It's sad that most players now don't know this and refuse to switch weapons during a fight.

I don't understand all the fuss about the flak. If you don't want people using the flak cannon on you, just kill them. In most mods, they're not going to respawn with it.
