this is basically a helix extrusion. the shape is rotated one notch around the centre and raised each time it's duplicated.
simply joining corresponding points creates 4-polys that aren't planar, so they are all split into 3-polys.
contrast with the spiral stair builder that essentially links each shape to a duplicate that's at the same height, and then deals with the join you get for the step.
