"In Germany, police said a 12-year-old girl had found a forged 50 euro note on a train, the first counterfeit case to come to light since the new cash was issued to more than 300 million Europeans on New Year's Day.

Another man used a fake 500 euro note, stuck together from publicity brochures, to con a casino out of deutschemark coins."

Heh. The issue isn't how easy it is to counterfeit; the issue is how easy it is to spot a counterfeit.

There is new American currency that has more anti-counterfeit features than simply special paint on special paper. There is holograms, watermarks, and threads woven into the paper, to name a few.

What is the conversion rate from American dollar to Euro?

The same for euro, all notes comes with holograms and much more. You can have a counterfeit euro only if you don't know what the original looks like. Differents maffias are profitting the fact that as a new currency, some fragile people (kids, old ppl, ...), don't know what the euro really looks like. And this despite a long time information campaign but there are still people who don't bother to listen.

Fur: I hope the euro won't rise so much: a "weak" euro is good for us, it hype the exportation of our goods.

That's true. A counterfeit can be as simple as writing on a piece of paper, but as long as it's easy to determine, that's more important. That's one of the issues the US government had to consider before switching to the new "monopoly" Dollars. The US Treasury was worried that when the switch is made, all the global counterfeits could undermine economies that used what is termed secondary currency like the Dollar. I don't know if there was any impact, but they must have felt some importance to investigate it.

Let's forget about those lines on maps, brothers :)

I'm going to visit a customer around Eupen tomorrow. I might get a jump in Aachen to check if prices are the same for videogames and hardware. :)

@Dupre: these case are limited. We are not talking about millions but only small spots in some areas where people has been less informed and can be abused. In Belgium, to avoid to have too much coins, we use the Proton. It's a chip fixed in our bank card that can be recharged and is used as "coin" in all shops, dentists or theatres with a simple device. This Proton chip can be recharged in bank terminals, ATM but also in public phones or adapted phones that some shopkeepers have. It is like an electronic purse but with a limited amount in it.

I found a CNN article from 1998 about it, since then, it has known a large success amongst the population. Here is the link =>

There's a similar system here called 'Chipper/ChipKnip' but the idiots tried to implement two incompatible systems at first so it isn't as popular as it should have been.

There have been no real problems with the Euro :)
except for a few small incidents where people tried to pay with forged notes of ƒ 25,- & ƒ 100,- ...

There have been reports of 'misprints' for the Dutch Euro coins (apperently some got by the quality checks ...).

And forget about borders ? :hmm: didn't another German say that about 50+ years ago ;)

We have a similar system called 'Geldkarte'. But I don't think it's popular at all, at least not in our region. We have three or four shops who accept it in our town, some ticket terminals accept it, too, but it's not usable as a replacement for cash, as it was meant to be...

I don't like the Idea of the Euro, that why im English :D. I read in the paper that the new coins can cause or worsen skin diseases/disorders., I doubt that is true but if it is if kind it kinda funny and anoying as both my parents have these problems so it is a high probabiltity that i might have one of these disorders.
Still like Pound sterling and I hope it lasts for ever, and I don't like the idea that if we join the Euro the the European central bank will dictate or set our intrest rates even if they maybe bad for the british econmey. The last thing I don't like about the Euro is the European central bank can set our tax rates :(.

You're right about the skin problems with the Euro. Some coins and one note contain nickel and some other compounds that can potentially cause allergic reactions. But I don't think this is a problem if you don't wear them as a chain around your neck. ;)
