Ok so like, I have two close friends who I play a lot of UT with (Dewi and navarro, some of you have seen them). They always kick my *** and tell me I suck.. BUT, I play on a modem that likes to ping between 200 - 400. One of them is on MediaOne and will always have a low ping (usually only in the low 100s). The other plays from his work, and his ping is also in the low 100s. How the hell can I stand a chance against them? Of course on my screen it looks like they're getting a few rockets or flak shells tossed at them, but all of a sudden they're not even in the area. When will they learn that no matter what I do it won't be fair?!?!

With high pings you usually have to resort to different tactics. Here are a few...

1) Use weapons that have a splash radius like the rocket launcher, the FLAK secondary, and the ASMD secondary.

2) Control power ups. Always know where the shield belt and armor are in a given level. Use them.

3) Host a game. This will surely tick them off. Have them connect to you and play a game. They will then realize what lag is really like. This often shuts people up faster than Oprah at an all you can eat buffet.

4) Wait until the others start fighting and then unload your weapons in the vicinity. The rocket launcher grenades really help in this.

5) Never use the sniper rifle. Never.

6) goto www.planetquake.com/lagcity for some lag related info. Site is now closed but it still has some great info for lagged players.

You can try the TweakDUN program but I have little luck with it. It seems that you have to adjust your gameplay in order to compensate for you lesser connection. Do what I do when I play on analog -- don't play to win, play to play. Nailing one LPB just one time is worth much more than getting nailed by him 3 times.

Hehe, I tried to host a game once, and they logged off VERY quickly, saying something like "this lag is so unbearable I can't see what the hell I'm doing". Dammit I want a cable modem!

I feel your pain...x2! My *usual* ping is 500, although mostly 800. My phone lines are the most pathetic in the world. Believe me if I could get any form of broadband I would jump at the chance, but its not available out in the sticks. I get screwed and everyone else is a LPB. You tell people on ICQ and whatnot and they're like *oh that sucks*, then you play them and you know they think you just suck. Everyone assumes that if they're latency is everyone elses, and I do mean that for both LPB and HPB's. LPB's think they're just so good, while not looking at the pings of the other players. HPB's assume all the other players are cheating because they can do more stuff than you can easily, especially sniping. I can't wait until there is no such thing as an analog modem!

This guy I work with... I turned him onto Q2... at first we had fun playing 1v1 when our pings were even.. we'd mouth each other the next morning at work, he had a faster computer but usually the outcomes were fairly even.. then he gets a cable modem, kicks my arse all over every map, and tells me I suck... whats up with that? What is it with these people? Tried reasoning with him but he's convinced himself that he's now got far better skills than I have, the fuqr... I told him UT sucks, he doesn't deserve to enjoy such a fine game... now he won't buy it, what a sucker... /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif

I agree with the whole "play for fun" mindset whether ya got a good ping or not. But DAMN did I talk some smack at my buddy when I kicked his *** the other night. My ping was a 500 (56k modem) and his was like a 150 (cable). He don't talk about how i suck no more, heh heh. It's the moments ike these that make life worthwhile.

I play on a 28.8k connection (with my 56k modem) all the time. I think the secret of any success that I enjoy is that I can dodge skillfully (not with "auto-dodge" either). I see a lot of people saying they use a WASD or the cursor arrows for forward, back, side strafe. I think that is a mistake! You are much more adept if you have a keyboard configuration that allows you to have seperate fingers on forward and back. For comfort of my hand, I use the left shift for forward (little finger), Z,X for side strafe and the space bar has my thumb on it for backwards. I use S or D for jump, but I'm not saying that is necessarily good, but I kept the C key available for games requiring reload or a "use" key.
Also, don't be afraid to run backwards and forwards interchangeably so that you can check for a "tail" while you are going somewhere. It just takes a little sidemove of the mouse to turn around while smoothly switching from forward to back.
Also, train yourself to shoot ahead of the targets. Watch for their blood so you know if you are hitting them. It usually does not take much lead to be enough.
Turn down your mousespeed. It needs to be fast but not "crazy-sensitive". If you can't snipe easily with the rifle because you have trouble putting the crosshair on target, your mousespeed is too high. Learn to do a simple side to side strafe while aiming the sniper rifle at the same spot with a slight compensating move of the mouse. This will help keep your position a little bit more uncertain to the Lpb. Most of them like to stand nice and still when they are sniping, heh heh. I take them down.

My pings can go any where from 350-400 on a good UK server to 450-550 on a good US server to 800-1000 on an Aussie server. You get used to the high pings. And remember this, if you can regulary beat someone who has a better connection than you, you know youre a better player. I just *love* whiping a load of LPBs. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif
